This calendar combines the works of 12 active design collectives working in, around and for the region. It was printed with combinations of 7 RISO colors in Beit Waraq. When/If all else fails, this calendar is a daily celebration of print, color, possibilities and collectivity. Here’s to 2023.

Bookbinding Workshop with Zahra'a Nasralla

Join us on the 27th for a Bookbinding Workshop led by Zahra'a Nasralla

In this workshop, Zahra’a will teach you how to bookbind your very own sketchbook using the Coptic stitch method. All the supplies needed will be provided to you at the workshop. By the end of the workshop, you will have a completed book and the skill set to make more on your own.

Zahra’a Nasralla is an Iraqi designer, book-binder, and maker. After graduating from the American University of Sharjah in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Zahra’a began to develop her passion of creating beautiful and functional books. Her signature piece, the Foundations A5, was inspired by her Foundations year at AUS. Zahra’a is currently working on her new series called “Can I Book-bind That?” where she explores the possibilities of materiality as pertains to recycled sheet materials.

This month, we will be reading "The Old is Dying and the New Cannot Be Born" by Nancy Fraser.

"The global political, ecological, economic, and social breakdown—symbolized by Trump’s election—has destroyed faith that neoliberal capitalism is beneficial to the majority. Nancy Fraser explores how this faith was built through the late twentieth century by balancing two central tenets: recognition (who deserves rights) and distribution (who deserves income). When these begin to fray, new forms of outsider populist politics emerge on the left and the right."

Join us this Saturday between 10am and 5pm GST for final Takeover for this season. We are excited to introduce you to Rummān Collective.

Rummān Collective .collective was formed by 4 individuals; Alexis Javero, Dania Al Tamimi, Doha Aboelezz, and Nava Rizvi, with the objective to establish accessible creative learning experiences for early-career artists through a series of online open calls, workshops and discussions about art.

The Collective's first program entitled The Allegorical Impulse, is a 5 week long program where 7 participants delve into the concept of archiving, and how it not only manifests as a simple act of remembering - but as an integral part of being. The outcomes are expected to be digitally exhibited over the summer of 2021.

يتكون Rummān Collective من 4 أفراد، أليكسيس جافيرو ودانيا التميمي ودوحة أبو العز ونافا رضوي، بهدف إنشاء خبرات تعليمية إبداعية تسهل للفنانين بداية حياتهم المهنية من خلال سلسلة من الدعوات المفتوحة عبر الإنترنت وورش العمل ومناقشات حول الفن.

أول برنامج جماعي لهم بعنوان The Allegorical Impulse، هو برنامج مدته 5 أسابيع حيث يتعمق 7 مشاركين في مفهوم الأرشفة، وكيف أنه لا يظهر فقط على أنه عمل بسيط للتذكر - ولكن كجزء لا يتجزأ من الوجود. من المتوقع أن يتم عرض النتائج رقميًا خلال صيف عام 2021.

Misbah is an Architect and Computational Designer, with a keen interest in a deliberate mediation of sustainable advanced technologies in catalyzing the bettering of urban issues. Her research focuses on pushing forward the boundaries of Architecture, Art and Design, while also exploring a more hands-on approach to design by undertaking advanced fabrication and prototyping projects. 

Misbah’s thesis project, entitled Orb[i]s, envisions the creation of a spatial infrastructure in the urban environment that will respond and adapt to the changing needs, numbers and development within the city, augmenting daily experiences and activities. Orb[i]s intends to develop new relations in the ever-evolving and adaptive human-machine ecology, and aims to form a link with the past, present and future through emphasizing on human connections with culture over the decades.

مصباح مهندسة معمارية ومصممة حسابية، تهتم بالتوسط المتعمد للتقنيات المتقدمة المستدامة في تحفيز تحسين القضايا الحضرية. يركز بحثها على دفع حدود الهندسة والفن والتصميم، مع استكشاف نهج عملي أكثر للتصميم من خلال تنفيذ مشاريع تصنيع ونماذج أولية متقدمة.

يتصور مشروع أطروحة مصباح، بعنوان Orb[i]s، إنشاء بنية تحتية مكانية في البيئة الحضرية من شأنها الاستجابة والتكيف مع الاحتياجات المتغيرة والأرقام والتنمية داخل المدينة، مما يزيد من الخبرات والأنشطة اليومية. يعتزم Orb[i]s تطوير علاقات جديدة في بيئة الإنسان والآلة المتكيفة باستمرار، ويهدف إلى تكوين رابط مع الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل من خلال التأكيد على الروابط البشرية مع الثقافة على مدى عقود.

Eman is a Dubai-based Architect and Jewelry Designer with a keen interest in fabrication through digital and traditional means. Educated as an Architect, her work has led to her interests expanding towards other facets of the design industry. In 2020, Eman established her own product design studio as an exploratory platform with a current focus on fine jewelry design.

Eman’s takeover will explore the journey behind her first jewelry collection, Molten, which draws inspiration from ephemeral moments in the process of creating jewelry that highlight the unique characteristics of the material. Ordinarily witnessed only by the artisans, these moments are immortalized into pieces of wearable sculpture that speak to the time and effort that goes into making each jewelry piece while challenging our perception of the material’s capabilities.

إيمان مهندسة معمارية ومصممة مجوهرات مقرها دبي ولديها اهتمام كبير بالتصنيع باستخدام الوسائل الرقمية والتقليدية. بعد دراستها كمهندسة معمارية، أدى عملها إلى توسيع اهتماماتها تجاه مجالات أخرى في التصميم. في عام 2020، أنشأت إيمان استوديو تصميم المنتجات الخاص بها كمنصة استكشافية مركزة حالياً على تصميم المجوهرات الراقية.

ستستكشف مشاركة إيمان العملية وراء مجموعتها الأولى من المجوهرات، مولتن، والتي تستوحي الإلهام من اللحظات العابرة في عملية صنع المجوهرات وتسلط الضوء على الخصائص الفريدة للمادة المستخدمة. عادة ما يشهد هذه اللحظات الحرفيون فقط، ومن خلال هذه المجموعة يتم تخليد هذه اللحظات في قطع من المنحوتات القابلة للارتداء. وتعبر عن الوقت والجهد المبذول في صنع كل قطعة مجوهرات، وتتحدى تلك اللحظات تصورنا لإمكانيات المواد المستخدمة أيضاً.

Dina Tawil is a multimedia designer by degree, an experience designer by vocation, and an illustrator by passion. Dina is always looking for exciting projects to work on and has a strong compulsion to create - everything from doodles to posters and travel videos. 

Mouza Al Hamrani is an illustrator and multimedia designer based in Ajman. Her practice revolves around experiences within her Khaleeji upbringing, touching on cultural inheritances, existentialism, superstition and the human condition. Her work incorporates kinetic/graphic elements and text in a humorous, playful and stylized way.

دينا طويل مصممة وسائط متعددة عن طريق الدراسة، ومصممة خبرة عن طريق المهنة، ورسامة شغوفة. تبحث دائمًا عن مشاريع مثيرة للعمل عليها ولديها رغبة قوية في الإبداع - من الرسومات المبتكرة إلى الملصقات ومقاطع الفيديو الخاصة بالسفر. 

موزة الحمراني رسامة ومصممة وسائط متعددة مقيمة في عجمان. تتمحور ممارستها الفنية حول نشأتها الخليجية، وتتطرق إلى الموروثات الثقافية والوجودية والخرافات والحالة الإنسانية العامة. يشتمل عملها على عناصر حركية وغرافيكية بروح من الدعابة والمرح.

Join us this Saturday for our first Instagram Takeover of the year. We're excited to introduce you to Pauline Roussel, the co-founder of Coworkies, a global job board targeted at coworking and collaborative workspaces.

Over the last 5 years, while building Coworkies, Pauline and her partner Dimitar have traveled the world of coworking spaces, visiting over 400 of them, to better understand their impact, leading them to release, in early 2021, a coffee table book entitled Around The World in 250 Coworking Spaces. While staying in touch with all of the spaces as they were working on their book, Pauline and Dimitar realized how much and how fast things change with time. Throughout the takeover, Pauline will be reflecting on the evolution of these coworking spaces over the last 5 years by sharing some of the stories featured in their book and explore time as an asset in business.

على مدى السنوات الخمس الماضية، وأثناء بناء Coworkies، تنقلت بولين وشريكها ديميتار في عالم مساحات العمل المشتركة، وزارا أكثر من ٤٠٠ منها لفهم تأثيرها بشكل أفضل. مما دفعهما إلى إصدار كتاب في أوائل عام ٢٠٢١ بعنوان (حول العالم في ٢٥٠ مساحة عمل مشتركة). ومن خلال اتصالهم بجميع المساحات أثناء عملهما على الكتاب، أدركا بولين وديميتار مدى وسرعة تغير الأشياء بمرور الوقت. طوال فترة العرض، ستعكس بولين مراحل تطور مساحات العمل المشتركة هذه على مدار السنوات الخمس الماضية من خلال مشاركة بعض القصص الواردة في كتابها واستكشاف الوقت كأحد الأصول في مجال الأعمال.
