Sensory Regulation
The goal of sensory regulation is to allow children and young people to maintain an appropriate level of alertness in order to respond appropriately to the sensory stimuli present in different environments. This may be in the form of co-regulation (supported to apply strategies) or self regulation (apply strategies alone).
⬆️ Activity ideas to increase arousal levels/alertness:
• Movement!! Jump on a trampoline, ride a bike, go on swings, run about or complete an obstacle course
• Eat crunchy food such as carrot sticks, crackers or pop corn
• Suck on ice cubes, frozen fruit or have a cold drink
• Listen to uptempo music
⬇️ Activity ideas to lower arousal levels/alertness:
• Deep pressure/heavy work. Carry a heavy backpack, do wall press ups or push something heavy
• Spend time in a quiet and dimly lit den
• Eat chewy foods such as dried fruit or a chewy sweet
• Practise deep breathing exercises
• Listen to calming music
• Yoga
• Mindfulness activities
