Tables and gauges clarify variance.
For breakdowns, Power BI offers two powerful tools: Tree Map and Decomposition Tree.
Using a tree map, earned value or any other parameter can be broken down by category at the lowest activity level. The chart automatically arranges areas by relative contribution — for example, if 25% of earned value is in reinforced concrete, the area reflects that share.
To ensure accuracy, always filter by a specific data date. Without this, Power BI may sum across multiple schedule updates, leading to duplication and misleading results.
Breakdown analysis highlights where value is concentrated, making it easier to identify critical areas and communicate performance clearly.

What Is a Fragnet in Delay Analysis?
A fragnet is how a delay event actually enters your schedule.
Short for fragmentary network, a fragnet takes the full chronology of an event and incorporates it into the project schedule.
The skill is not writing the fragnet. It is deciding what to leave out without losing what actually caused the delay.
How to Create a Project Delay Trend Chart in Power BI
Reporting delay at a single data date is not enough. Teams often present the latest update but that snapshot hides the bigger picture.
A delay trend chart shows:
Normal fluctuations from delays and recovery measures
Healthy cycles of falling behind, correcting, and regaining momentum
Warning signs when delays accumulate without recovery
Instead of comparing only this week vs. last week, the chart reveals the trajectory. In one case, delay grew from 25 to 43 days in just four weeks — a signal that static reporting would miss.
Power BI enables this analysis with filters, tooltips, and parameters, helping project teams see not just the numbers, but the trend behind them.
Long Leads Items Explained
Procurement activities often span weeks or months, making them long lead items. A single delay in manufacturing or delivery can ripple across the schedule, creating negative float and critical risks.
Unlike construction, procurement progress is harder to track because teams may not know if production has started or if shipments are on time.
That’s why these activities must be closely monitored, broken down in WBS, and given enough float to absorb uncertainty.
Treat procurement with the same rigor as construction.
Ignoring long lead items is a blind spot that can derail the entire project.

For example, scrambling to submit a progress report at the last minute can compromise quality.
The same applies to schedule updates, delay analysis, and correspondences because these tasks require pre-work, and without a system, inefficiencies occur.
Instead of reacting, planning engineers should be in control mode with a structured workflow.

How to Choose the Right TIA Window for Each Delay Event in Prospective Environments
Choosing the right TIA window is the difference between a delay analysis that holds up and one that gets challenged.
Every delay event has its own rhythm. Some need a tight window around the trigger. Get the window wrong and you either miss the ripple effects across the schedule or drag in noise that wasn't caused by the event at all.
The rule I keep coming back to: let the event define the window, not the other way around.

10 lessons I learned throughout my project controls career
1. The loudest person in the meeting is often the most insecure.
Trying to prove them wrong rarely works. Don't engage and limit unnecessary interaction with them.
2. Planners spend most of their working lives planning.
Ironically, you shouldn't plan your life the same way. Embrace uncertainty and surprise.
3. Treat your team as human beings, not objects.
Don't play the role of the judge whose job is simply to assign blame. Be humble and maintain respectful relationships with the people. Your career will benefit.
4. A planner may eventually become a Project Controls Director rather than the CEO. Some people see that as a limitation. I don't.
Becoming a CEO doesn't automatically create a fulfilling life. You can become a highly respected professional and lead a fulfilling life.
5. Never let routine stop you from learning.
Even on your busiest days, aim to learn something new.
Small daily improvements compound and train your brain to pursue growth.
6. Accept that not everyone will like you.
Some people will dislike you for no reason at all. You cannot control that.
Spend less energy worrying about what everyone thinks of you.
7. Your colleagues don't automatically have to become your close friends.
You can be friendly and respectful without sharing everything about your personal life. Great friendships can come from the workplace, but this is the exception not the rule.
8. Careers unfold in unpredictable ways.
Continuously improve yourself, and new doors will likely open along the way.
9. Seek work-life balance.
Your entire identity shouldn't revolve around your career.
Ironically, stepping away from work often makes you better at it. You return with more energy, perspective, and focus.
10. Learn to appreciate where you are.
If you don't feel grateful for where you are and what you have today, you probably won't feel grateful when you have more.
How to schedule engineering activities the right way?
Engineering activities such as shop drawings, material submissions, approvals must align with construction, not drive it.
The cycle is simple: submit → approve → procure → deliver → build.
The mistake? Scheduling all engineering from day one through the scheduling software by default.
This creates unrealistic dependencies and delays. Instead, link engineering to backbone activities (like concrete) and use free float as a buffer.
Keep approvals ready just before construction starts, with 1–4 weeks margin depending on risk.
Engineering supports construction. When approvals and deliveries are timed precisely, projects stay realistic, risks are absorbed, and progress flows without disruption.
