NOT GETTING FASTER?

If you’ve never done structured VO₂ max intervals, one session a week could be a big difference to your power.

Start with 3 × 3 minutes at around 110% of FTP, or roughly 9/10 effort, with easy riding between efforts. As you get used to them, work towards 4 × 4 minutes. You may need to adjust the power for the longer intervals so you can complete them well.

The hard work matters, but so does giving yourself enough recovery before the next hard ride.

WHY DO I WANT TO GET FASTER?

To challenge myself. Because I’m competitive. Because there’s something deeply satisfying about pushing yourself to the limit and hanging in there when your whole body is screaming to stop.

At 55, I want to keep doing it for as long as my body will allow me to.

What keeps you pushing yourself on the bike?

WINTER TRAINING SHOULDN’T ALL BE EASY RIDES.

Building your base endurance is still important. But that doesn’t mean leaving your hard rides until spring.

The important thing is getting the balance right. Include purposeful hard rides, give yourself enough recovery between them and keep your easy rides easy enough to support that.

That balance will depend on your fitness, available time and how well you’re recovering. Simply adding more intensity isn’t the answer.

265W → 238W.

Normally, that wouldn’t be something to celebrate.

But after five broken ribs, a punctured lung and a month completely off the bike, I’m pretty happy with where I’m starting.

The benchmark is set.

First back to 265. Then beyond it.

Let’s see what this winter brings.

FAT BIKES IN THE FOG.

Could barely see the desert when we started. Eventually the sun came out and we got the views that made it all worthwhile 🤩

Sand everywhere. Exactly the sort of Sunday adventure I live for.

BACK ON THE RACE BIKE.

After the crash in June, getting back on the race bike had felt a long way off.

Sunday was my first big ride on it since. Same track, same early start — just very good to be out there again.

Not every ride needs to be about watts and interval training. Great morning out in the Dubai desert 🤩🤙

55 today.

After the crash in June, being back on the road felt like a bigger deal than I expected.

Straight to the mountains. Not a bad way to celebrate.

COMPLETING EVERY WORKOUT DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN THE TRAINING LOAD IS RIGHT.

One client was improving in some areas, but his estimated VO₂ max was falling. He said he wasn’t fatigued, yet his enjoyment and motivation were also dropping.

No single measure tells the whole story. But taken together, these changes suggested fatigue was building and his training needed adjusting.

I reduced his overall load and encouraged him to spend more time riding for fun. His enjoyment returned, the fatigue cleared and his performance improved significantly.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to do less for a while.

YOUR FTP MAY NOT BE WHY YOU’RE GETTING DROPPED.

VO₂ max is the horsepower of your aerobic engine. FTP still matters, but if your VO₂ max is low, every surge or climb uses more of your available capacity. That makes it harder to respond, recover and go again.

That doesn’t mean making every ride hard. The right VO₂ max workout needs to fit around your current fitness, other training and recovery.

Complete my free Performance Review and I’ll give you a personalised VO₂ max workout to help you build the horsepower to hold the group.
