Why most expat women give up on French (and how to not be one of them)

Most expat women start learning French with real motivation then stop within 3 months. After 14 years teaching in international schools and running The French Institute, I've seen the same five reasons over and over.

1. They start with grammar, not communication. Traditional courses front-load conjugation tables before survival phrases. Motivation dies before competence builds.

2. The schedule doesn't survive real life. A fixed weekly class is the first thing to go when work or kids take over. Methods need to flex around the learner, not the other way around.

3. No clear target. "Get better at French" isn't a goal. "Pass DELF B1 by June" is. Without a measurable target, progress is invisible and motivation erodes.

4. Mistakes feel like failure instead of data. Adult learners especially high-achieving professionals often disengage the moment they feel incompetent. The method has to normalize error as part of the process.

5. No community accountability. Learning alone removes the social pressure that keeps most habits alive.

The fix isn't more discipline. It's a different structure: clear targets, flexible pacing, and prep built around real exams like the DELF — not abstract fluency.

J'ai une étudiante qui refusait de parler français.

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend Viva Technology, and it was truly an amazing experience.
I 've been invited as a Business Owner & CEO to represent The French Institute .

Despite the extreme heat in Paris that day, the event was exceptional from start to finish.

Viva Technology is one of the biggest technology and innovation exhibitions in Europe, where startups, major companies, and innovators come together to showcase the future of tech.

I met incredible people from all around the world. I want to sincerely thank all the professionals I had the chance to connect with on site for their warm welcome, expertise, and inspiring conversations. A special thank you to the teams at LinkedIn and NOTION for taking the time to exchange and share insights.

I learnt so many new things that i can t wait to implement into The French Institute .

I was truly amazed by all the innovations I discovered. I got to play football at Orange Business stand (and I even scored a goal—haha, I swear I never play football!), see all kinds of robots, create my own perfume using AI based on my emotions, try scalp analysis with Samsung Electronics, skin analysis with Lancôme, and explore so many other incredible technologies.

The only downside was the waiting time for each experience, but it was understandable since it was Saturday and the last day, so the event was very crowded.

Overall, it was an exceptional experience, and I am already looking forward to next year’s edition, to keep learning, connecting and growing The French Institute .
