Searching for hidden animals is more than just a fun activity. This simple learning-through-play activity supports visual scanning, attention skills and problem-solving as children look carefully, stay focused and work out where each animal might be hiding. 🐾

One of the most useful words a child can learn is “help”.

But we don’t teach it instead of more specific communication.

Before introducing generalized requests like “help”, we first build a strong foundation of specific mands. For example, a learner may learn to request “puzzle”, “connect puzzle”, or other specific items and actions they need during play.

As communication develops, we also teach generalized requests for assistance. This is a skill identified in the Essential for Living (EFL) curriculum because there are many situations where a child knows what they want to do but can’t quite do it on their own.

Instead of becoming frustrated or giving up, they can simply ask for help.

In this video, you’ll see this learner independently requesting “help” while completing a puzzle. It may look like a simple moment, but it’s the result of carefully building communication skills over time.
