An outdoor area can be open every day without being used to its full potential.

Quality outdoor provision is not simply about giving children time outside. It should create opportunities for movement, exploration, investigation, problem-solving and real-life learning.

But it can be difficult to step back and look objectively at a space your team uses every day.

A calm room isn’t always a quiet room.

Children can be talking, moving and completely absorbed in their play while still feeling emotionally calm. On the other hand, a room can look quiet, tidy and beautifully organised while the children inside it feel unsure, restricted or overwhelmed.

In Episode 26 of Eyes On Us, Creating Calm Learning Environments, Emma and Sophie explore what calm really looks like in early years practice.

They discuss the assumptions we make about calm spaces, the effect the physical environment can have on children’s emotions and why children need quiet areas where they can rest and regulate.

They also look at the importance of observing how children actually use the environment. Where do they choose to play? Where does conflict happen? When does the room become louder—and is it the sound of engaged play or the sound of children becoming overwhelmed?

Sometimes creating a calmer environment is not about adding something new. It is about noticing what the children are already telling us and being willing to make a change.

A calmer start to the week does not always require a completely new plan.

Often, it comes from small things that make the day feel safer and more predictable for children.

Before the week begins, consider these five simple checks:

1. Can every child be greeted by name?
Being noticed and welcomed helps children begin the day with a sense of connection.

2. Is something familiar ready for them?
A favourite activity, song, book or resource can give a child an immediate point of connection in the room.

3. Is the visual timetable ready?
Seeing what will happen next can reduce uncertainty and help children understand the pattern of the day.

4. Is there space for children who need closeness or quiet?
Some children may need to stay near an adult or spend time in a calmer area before they feel ready to explore.

5. Does the team know how difficult drop-offs will be supported?
A consistent response helps children and families know what to expect from the adults around them.

These actions may seem small, but repeated experiences of adults being calm, present and predictable are how trust is built.

A great deal of preparation happens before children enter an early years setting.

Rooms are organised.
Resources are selected.
Displays are completed.
Cupboards are sorted.
Timetables are prepared.

But the staff team also needs to feel ready.

The beginning of a new academic year can be an anxious time for practitioners, especially those who are joining a new setting, moving into a different room or working with a new team.

Before concentrating only on the physical environment, leaders can make time to ensure that the adults are prepared too.

Does everyone understand how the setting will approach settling in?

Have you agreed how the team will respond when a child cries, withdraws or needs to remain close to an adult?

Are routines and responsibilities clear?

Do new practitioners feel able to ask questions and request support?

A stressed and uncertain team will find it harder to create a calm and predictable environment for children.

When practitioners feel informed, secure and supported, they are better able to provide that same emotional security to the children in their care.

Strong starts are created by prepared environments and supported people.

When a child finds it difficult to meet an expectation, our first response may be to focus on changing the child’s behaviour.

How can we make them join the group?
How can we stop them playing alone?
How can we encourage them to share?
How can we make them more independent?

But behaviour does not happen separately from relationships, development or the environment.

A child may not join the group because they do not yet feel safe enough to participate.

They may struggle to follow a routine because the routine is still unfamiliar.

They may not be ready to share because the social confidence and emotional skills required are still developing.

They may depend on an adult because the room has not been arranged in a way that allows them to do things independently.

Before focusing on how to stop or correct a behaviour, become curious about the need behind it.

Is the expectation realistic for this child’s age and stage of development?
Do they understand what is expected?
Does the environment make it possible?
Do they feel secure enough to try?

Sometimes the most helpful change is not something we do to the child. It is something we change about our interactions, routines or environment.
