The difference between stress and dysregulation - and why it matters for how you lead.

Stress is temporary pressure your system handles and recovers from.

Dysregulation is what happens when the recovery never comes.

Most high-performing leaders are not stressed. They are chronically dysregulated - and they have been for years.

The difference:
→ Stress produces performance. Dysregulation erodes it.
→ Stress is a signal. Dysregulation becomes the baseline.
→ Stress you can work with. Dysregulation is working against you.

When your system never fully recovers between cycles of pressure, your ceiling lowers. Quietly. Gradually. Then suddenly.

This is the conversation the industry isn't having.

The culture of NOW.

Living in the UAE for the last 11 years has taught me that people have adapted to a culture that moves around how quickly you can get stuff done, delivered, received. The mentality of "I want it RIGHT NOW" I personally find extremely exhausting.

A lot of companies take pride in slogans like: "Delivered to your door in under 15 minutes" or "get this in the next 7 hours." And we have the habit to heavily judge this, if not achieved.

I often think about the delivery riders that have to adhere to short timelines in order to fulfill our society's expectations. That cannot be easy.

Whilst it is amazing to have this high level of service, I find that it creates also a lot of stress, unnecessary stress, and high levels of expectations from everyone and everything around, all the time, constantly.

So today, I want you to pause. Pause before you order something. Pause before you ask someone to deliver something urgently. Pause to understand what the other person might have to go through in order for you to be "happy."

Pause. Practice empathy. Decelerate.

Send this to someone who is always on the go to remind them it is fine to pause. The power is in the pause.

In my day to day, building and sustaining client relationships are key.

Whilst I was forced to adapt to online meetings the last month, I am even more pleased to restart my face to face activities again. Although it can get tough, I did miss it. No two days are the same and that is what I love about what I do.

I see 5-6 clients every day, I am mainly on the road, doing 100s of km each weekday. Doing this in constant traffic on overloaded roads is one thing: It can get stressful, frustrating and affect your mood. Doing it on rather empty roads gives me the opportunity to do it more time efficiently with more impact in number of quality visits I do each day.

Planning my visits geographically is also another very important element, especially now when the weather is getting increasinly hot and my AC on full blast.

So here we are, back to the daily grind, but more regulated and relentless than ever🤍
