Following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Saint Joseph University Dubai and the DIFC Courts, the Rector of Saint Joseph University, Professor Salim Daccache, paid a courtesy visit to the DIFC Courts to express gratitude for their collaboration.

Warm and proud congratulations from the USJ Dubai family to Mr. Nassib Ziade, a member of the university's advisory board, who will begin on January 1, 2025, Nassib Ziadé his term as President of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT), of which he has been a member since July 1, 2023 and Vice-President since January 1, 2024.

In addition to his duties at UNAT, Nassib Ziadé has chaired the Administrative Tribunal of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2021. He is regularly appointed arbitrator in international arbitrations relating to investment and public international law, as well as international trade, covering in particular the energy, construction, engineering and infrastructure sectors.

An alumnus of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Saint Joseph University of Beirut, Nassib Ziadé has maintained close ties with his alma mater. For many years, LLM students in business law at the Faculty of Law in Beirut and Dubai have benefited from his teaching and expertise.

Saint Joseph University Dubai, in collaboration with LexisNexis and Habib Al Mulla & Partners, organized on the 26th of November 2024 a panel discussion titled “Empowering Family Businesses in the UAE: Legal Framework and Strategic Challenges” at the Waldorf Astoria, DIFC, Dubai.

The event started with an opening speech by Dr. Rita Waked, the Vice-Dean of the School of Law at Saint Joseph University Dubai who highlighted the pivotal role of family businesses in the UAE’s economy and underscored the importance of fostering dialogue to address their unique legal and strategic challenges.

Moderated by Dr. Myrna Saad, Director of the LLM in Business Law at Saint Joseph University Dubai, the discussion featured insights from an esteemed panel of speakers: Mr. Adib Rashid, Director, Dubai Center for Family Businesses, Mr. Ismael Hajjar, Partner, PWC Middle East, Mrs. Amira Fayad, Associate Director – Legal and Company Secretary, Seddiqi Holding and Mrs. Alia Al Mulla, Head of Restructuring and Shareholder Disputes, Habib Al Mulla & Partners.

Fourth-year law students recently participated in a jurisprudence workshops in collaboration with Lexis Nexis, focusing on landmark judicial decisions in corporate law.

Under the guidance of Dr. Rita Waked and Lexis Nexis experts, students delve into the in-depth analysis of real court cases, learning to interpret complex judgments and extract essential elements. The summary-writing process requires both rigor and precision, allowing students to familiarize themselves with professional publication standards.

The workshop also offers a unique professional dimension: the summaries written by students will be published on the Lexis Nexis platform, a global leader in legal research. Each summary will be credited to the student and the University, providing them visibility within the legal community.
