3 things you need to understand before using gouache 🎨

1. Gouache is water-based and reactivates with water.
Unlike acrylic, gouache can be reactivated even after it dries. This affects how you layer, blend and work over previous paint.

2. Know what you can mix it with.
Gouache can be used alongside some mediums but not with every. You need to know what you can mix it with to create and explore different textures and usages of the paint without losing its characteristics.

3. Water changes the character of the paint.
Add more water and gouache becomes more transparent, closer to a watercolour wash. Use less water and it becomes more opaque and solid.

Understanding the medium is just as important as learning how to paint with it.

Should you actually trust the process?

In art, progress doesn’t always look like progress.

Sometimes you spend weeks learning something and your work still doesn’t look the way you imagined.

Sometimes your next painting feels worse than your last one.

Sometimes you have to go back to the basics instead of creating something “beautiful.”

That doesn’t mean you’re not improving.

Learning art is about building an understanding of observation, proportion, colour, composition, technique and problem-solving and those skills take time to develop.

The process isn’t always pretty.

But when you keep learning, practising and understanding why something works, the progress eventually starts showing in your work.

So yes, trust the process but also ensure there’s learning behind it.

Because progress isn’t always visible in the painting you’re creating today. 🎨

Behind every masterpiece, every refined technique, and every polished portfolio, there is a journey of learning.

And even the greatest artists didn’t create in isolation.

They studied the artists before them. They observed, experimented, analysed techniques, copied to understand, and eventually developed their own way of working.

For a self-taught artist, exploration becomes the mentor—learning through observation, experimentation, mistakes and discovery.

That process is incredibly valuable.

But it takes time.

And for teens preparing for art school, there are years of knowledge to explore: drawing, colour, composition, perspective, anatomy, mediums, creative thinking and more.

That’s where mentorship can make the journey more focused.

Our Portfolio Preparation Program for teens 14+ gives students guidance from experienced artists while still allowing them to explore, experiment and develop their own artistic voice.

Why does my child learn music slower than others? 🎵

You don’t need to be good at drawing to learn sketching. 🎨

In fact, that’s exactly why you learn.

Sketching isn’t about having naturally perfect lines or being “talented.” It’s a skill you build through understanding and practice.

You learn to observe, understand proportions, break down shapes, create form, work with light and shadow, and gradually become more confident with your hand.

So if you’ve always thought, “I can’t draw,” maybe you were never taught how to.

It’s not about expecting a 5-year-old to paint like an adult.

Can you really learn to paint without learning to draw? 🎨

Technically, yes.

But if you want to truly understand painting, drawing is one of the most important foundations to develop.

Drawing teaches you to see and understand:

1. Shape & proportion
2. Perspective & structure
3. Form & depth
4. Light & value
5. Composition
6. Observation

And these skills don’t disappear when you pick up a paintbrush.

They come with you.

That’s why drawing is an important part of our Fine Arts curriculum. We’re not teaching students to draw just for the sake of drawing—we’re building the visual foundation they need to become stronger painters.

Before you learn how to paint what you see, you need to learn how to truly see it.
