In reinforced concrete slabs and beams, steel bars are divided into two main types:
๐น Main Bars ๐ช
These are the primary load-carrying bars.
โ๏ธ Placed in the direction of shorter span in slabs ๐
โ๏ธ Take tensile stress
โ๏ธ Usually larger diameter
โ๏ธ Placed at bottom in simply supported slabs
Main bars resist bending and carry major structural load.
๐น Distribution Bars ๐
These are secondary bars.
โ๏ธ Placed perpendicular to main bars
โ๏ธ Smaller diameter
โ๏ธ Help distribute load evenly
โ๏ธ Control shrinkage and temperature cracks ๐ก๏ธ
In slabs:
๐ Main bars = strength
๐ Distribution bars = crack control & load distribution
Proper spacing, cover blocks ๐งฑ, and tying wire ๐ ensure correct placement.
โ๏ธ Both bars work together to provide strength, stability, and durability to the concrete structure.

๐ฝ Spherical Bridge Bearings Vs Pot bearings (part1):
๐ธThe spherical bridge bearings are with a large rotation capacity more than other common bearings (elastomeric and pot bearings).
๐ฝ How it works?!
๐ธSpherical bridge bearing is a structural bearing, which consists of :
๐ธA precision-machined steel component assembly with a spherical concave and convex element in the center.
๐ธThe surface of the dome is polished to maintain the lowest possible friction, thus allowing rotation by bending and sliding.
๐ธThe spherical bridge bearing has a high-strength steel body and is designed for high vertical, horizontal and lateral loads, and where large rotational structural displacements need to be accommodated which is difficult for other bearings to work with.
๐ธTo provide movement capability, the bearings can be combined with flat sliding elements, guides and limiting rings.
๐ฝ The spherical bearing is composed of :
๐ธAn upper steel plate,
๐ธA lower steel plate,
๐ธA convex middle plate,
๐ธ And two PTFE plates of different shapes,
๐ฝ When and why we use Spherical bearings instead of Pot bearings ?!
It depends on bridge high loadings, rotation and common temperature of climate this is obvious for:
๐ธlarge-angle bridges that pot bearings can't work for
๐ธwide-curved bridges,
๐ธlarge torsion bridges,
๐ธlow-temperature bridges below -40โ, etc.
๐ธ Longer service life
All these conditions make pot bearing not suitable for using cause its mechanism doesn't fulfil them ๐
๐ฝ Types of Spherical bearings:
๐ธSame as (pot bridge) bearing, the spherical bearing has fixed type, guided sliding type, and free sliding type.
๐ธFixed bearing โ vertical rotation performance
๐ธGuided sliding spherical bearing โ vertical rotation and longitudinal sliding performance
๐ธFree sliding spherical bearing โ Vertical rotation, longitudinal and horizontal sliding performance.
๐ฝ Difference between spherical bearings and pot bearings ( In brief ):
๐ธSpherical bearing can take even higher loads, strength and rotation.
๐ธThere is no Elastomer sealing ring, rubber. etc like in pot bearings.
๐ธ It is thinner than pot bearings.
๐ธIt takes less pedestal area than Pot bearings due to the strength of sliding material.
๐ธIts typically a 8 mm thick dimpled sheet called UHMWPE -180 Mpa (twice of PTFE).
