The reason English reading is hard is a number: 26 letters are asked to carry 44 sounds.

Those 44 phonemes split into 24 consonant sounds and 20 vowel sounds, and they are written with roughly 250 different letter combinations - which is the whole difficulty in one sentence.

Every parent has confidently said “sound it out” and then needed to sound out the word “through”. 😅 Tag one who has.

There is a real reason it fails. Around 250 letter combinations are used to spell English's 44 sounds, so the same sound can be written several ways and the same letters can say different things: through, though and thought share four letters and almost nothing else. The /ai/ sound alone is spelled ai, ay, a_e, eigh, ey and ei. Words like these are taught as common exception words in Year 1 & 2 - children learn them as wholes because the code genuinely does not work on them. So when sounding out fails, the child is not the problem and neither are you: that word is simply on the exception list.
