In a world that seems all jumbled up, we find it comforting to write down things we know to be 100% true. We know AI is a powerful tool that is already having dramatic impact on the world. We know that it will transform the global economy. We know that it will transform education, but exactly how no one knows. We do know, without a shadow of a doubt, that critical thinking and creative problem solving will be more important than ever.

We would love to create a program that sends schools around the world into outer space. Perhaps we could send a cube sat and rideshare on a larger rocket. Schools could propose the missions. Yes it would be expensive, but it would be super fun and super cool.

Given the current turmoil in global supply chains and the rising cost of food due to inflation, as well as the impact of supply chains on global warming and carbon emissions, we’ve been thinking about solutions to create food security, even in urban environments without arable land. An incredible amount of water and energy is used to water grass and decorative gardens and parks and fields all over any city or country. What if we repurposed some of this water and energy to grow food…but also created incentives and programmatic structure to do it collectively to ensure a meaningful scale and impact…what would that look like? The idea of an urban food forest competition has been percolating and we’ve been doing some speculative thinking and designing about it. Want to build this with us get in touch. design

We have been observing our own use of water and energy in our garden to grow decorative grasses, bushes and flowers, and wondering with a little bit of incentive we might be able to use the same resources to grow some significant amount of fresh produce. If that was cascaded across hundreds or thousands of households or schools, how much food might we be able to produce locally without an increase in consumption of water and energy? As an individual act in one home, this is completely uninteresting. Plenty of people have gardens that grow some fruits and vegetables, but if considered programmatically at a larger scale, it has the potential to become something more.

This is a program we would love to create. It would be exciting to set the parameters and see which schools or households or communities can grow the most tonnage of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We think that there is a way to view water and energy consumption programmatically and use the levers of programmatic thinking to help drive more sustainable consumption of those resources.

Not much is guaranteed. We can’t predict the future. But we’re 100% sure of this.

Put your values into action…is something we try to do every day. It might sound cliche, but it guides everything we do.

We’re excited to launch Bon Discovery League (BDL) Open Edition!
BDL is an afterschool club that helps middle and high school students explore different career paths, connect with industry experts, and work on projects they can use for university applications.
This season, we’re covering many industries, starting with Urban Planning 🌇. Join BDL Session 1 on Monday, 22 November 2024, from 5:00 pm – 6:15 pm (GMT+4) to learn how neighbourhoods are planned, traffic is managed, and cities are designed!
It’s free for everyone to join. Use this link to book your spot: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/1117278551693/WN_N-WkBaggRGaSs1m4E9jI6w
