5 Ways to Involve Your Kids in Your Business Education

While you’re learning how to beef up your business education, your kids can be learning about business too. Why not give your kids a head start in becoming the entrepreneurs of the future? You may even discover your kids are naturals. Here are five ways you can get your kids interested in marketing, branding and problem solving while building their entrepreneurial mindset.

1. Look at Successful Entrepreneurs

Kids love having role models that inspire them. Let your kids learn about the entrepreneurial journey by telling them the stories behind huge successes like Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey. Or they may be more interested in today’s youngest entrepreneurs, like the 9-year-old toy reviewer with millions of subscribers on YouTube, Evan from EvanTubeHD. Sometimes child entrepreneurs are featured on the show Shark Tank, where they pitch their businesses to investors.

2. Analyze Existing Companies Together

Besides looking at entrepreneurs they can admire, let your kids also analyze companies and brands they already may already know. Get on the computer and check out how those brands are faring on social media and on their company website. With younger kids, you can talk about how colors, images and design are used to appeal to the senses. Pull up a retailer they know of like Gap or Abercrombie & Fitch, and talk about the aspects the company uses to draw customers in. Show older kids how websites like Amway employ storytelling through blogging to get potential customers interested in their products.

3. Take Entrepreneurial Lessons from Cartoons

Chances are your kids already have TV time. You can turn this into an opportunity for business education by exposing them to cartoons that teach money and business concepts. You can then discuss the message with your kids after the cartoon has sparked their intrigue. Warren Buffet’s Secret Millionaires Club is a cartoon that educates kids about entrepreneurship, money and business concepts like reputation and revenue.

4. Play Business Simulation Games

Play board games like Monopoly or Payday, and teach your child about making business decisions along the way. Use these games to introduce the concepts you learn from your business education in a way kids can understand through practical simulation experiences. You can even find business simulation games online that put your child in the shoes of a business owner.

5. Read Business Books with Your Kids

There are books about entrepreneurship that appeal to kids of all ages. For kids as young as preschoolers and kindergarteners, read a book like “Lemonade in Winter: A Book About Two Kids Counting Money.” “The Coolest Startups in America” is an entertaining book that can inspire teens. You can also find books for children about historical innovators like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison, whom they’ve probably been introduced to in school.

KIDS MBA - THE VERDICT
Over the weekend Janah & Serene took part in what I believe is a wonderful programme, KidsMBA, through , giving children aged 12+ an opportunity to hone their business skills. Taught by a local university professor, the programme aims to give teens the chance to learn more about what it takes to set up a business. It's really about tapping into the creative minds of young entrepreneurs. At the end of the two-day course each student was asked to think of a business and present their plan, very similar to Shark Tank. As a parent it helped me work out where my girls' interests were and more importantly how to help steer them in that direction. Serene was all about health and fitness for teens while Janah wanted to develop eco-friendly products. SWIPE to see the images and please check out my highlights for all the coverage and what the girls had to say. I highly recommend it. I will certainly look in to registering Alisar when she is old enough. There will be another session later this year. Please stay tuned, otherwise please follow for more information.
