Over the decades, I have amassed an “impressive wealth of knowledge” (not my words) by interacting with educators, schools leaders, and government entities across various regions of the world. That vast amount of knowledge has only served to humble me with the realization of how little I really know! This is in stark contrast to the Dunning-Kruger effect!

The teacher's role is still a very essential one in the foreseeable future. Primarily, it is biologically essential for humans, particularly children, to interact with other humans. It is essential for children to hear human voices because each voice they hear is unique. These voices vibrate the surrounding air and are accompanied by whole body gestures and movement which can be perceived in three dimensions, creating variations in light, casting shadows, and producing rustling sounds—even when a child's attention is diverted.

A human teacher brings uniqueness to the classroom by rephrasing what they say, making mistakes, expressing facial emotion, and moving about. Each teacher has a presence different from others and this can lead in one way or another to learning for each child.

Teachers are the persons who will be facilitating the students learning regardless of how much technology is available. If the technology is so advanced that teachers are no longer required, then there is no purpose for a school classroom or a schedule for recess. Each child can learn at home through the technological means available.

For students to learn, two essential conditions need to be met. A high attention span and a meaningful input. But the challenge for every teacher is how to create high attention span and meaningful input situations for a class full of diverse students taking several different subjects each day. Why do people have a high attention span in other situations such as when playing a game whether that game is electronic or physical? I am not jumping on the gamification bandwagon but I am simply investigating what peaks our attention and what meaningful input is. I think can say without a shred of doubt that every game has structure but provides many variables and the player has the power of making decisions and choices during the game (the experience in other words). How does that relate to learning in the classroom? As teachers, we need to create learning experiences that are structured but comes with variables - much like a game. This provides students with the opportunity to make choices and decisions during the learning experience. [Disclaimer: No AI was used to write this, just good old gray matter.]

By the time a present-day kindergartner graduates from university, around nine new jobs will have been created that do not exist today. Teachers, curriculum developers, school planners and publishers are entrusted with the role of planning for decades if not for a century ahead of present time. The development of each child will entail not only learning core subjects but in developing enduring human and social competencies.

The future does not belong to those who have knowledge, but to those who can create new knowledge.
