An IELTS Class Story from Last Week…
Last week, something happened in our IELTS class that perfectly reminded me why expert guidance matters so much — especially in the Writing section.
A student named Alex (let’s call him that) walked in with confidence and said,
"I think my essay is pretty solid this time!"
He handed me his response to the question:
"Education must be free for all. Do you agree or disagree?"
As I started reading, one sentence stood out:
"Education should be free because it is a basic right and students from poor families cannot afford it so if it’s not free many talents will be wasted and the country will not develop."
I paused.
"Alex," I said gently,
"This is a classic run-on sentence. Can you tell me exactly what you mean here?"
He looked puzzled.
"I mean education is important, poor students will be left out if it’s not free, and then the country suffers."
Exactly! But the way he wrote it made it hard for the examiner to follow the logic — or give him a high score for Coherence & Cohesion.
Another sentence read:
"Making education free will help everyone and people will be educated and this will reduce crime and also more people can get jobs."
I smiled. "That’s a whole list of great ideas... but all in one sentence?"
To a regular reader, these sentences seem fine. They "make sense." But to an IELTS examiner? They signal a lack of sentence control and structure — and that means Band 5 or 5.5 at best, no matter how smart your ideas are.
It took me a little while to convince him — because from his point of view, the essay sounded right. But once we broke the sentences down and rewrote them with proper punctuation and logical connectors, he saw the difference instantly.
Lesson?
IELTS Writing isn’t just about having ideas. It’s about expressing them clearly, logically, and in the way examiners are trained to assess.
