Some words are officially banned in our writing practice 👀

Why? Because children often rely on the same easy words again and again - and it can make their writing sound flat.

So I made a Banned Word Cheat Sheet with stronger alternatives they can use instead.

Think:
nice → delightful / thoughtful / impressive
said → whispered / replied / shouted
big → enormous / towering / gigantic

It’s a really simple way to help children make their writing more interesting without making it harder.

Becoming a mum changed the way I thought about education.

I was a teacher before I became a parent, so I understood curriculum, progression and how to spot what a child needed next.

But becoming a mum made me see education from the other side.

Parents want to help, but they’re rarely shown what their child should be learning, what to practise or what to do when something feels tricky.

That was a huge part of why I built Teach Me Miss.

Parents don’t need to become teachers.

They just need the right guidance to know what to do next. 💚

Is your child racing through books without actually absorbing the story? 📚

Reading the words on the page is only step one - understanding them and building a vivid image in their mind is where real comprehension happens.

To help them build deeper connections, try the One Page Pause:

1️⃣ One Page: Read a single page together.

2️⃣ One Pause: Stop before flipping to the next page.

3️⃣ One Question: Ask a simple prompt like “What do you think happens next?” or “Which word tells us how the character feels?”

Teaching children to notice descriptive language helps them express themselves far more vividly when they write.

I’m Eliz - a UK-qualified primary teacher, founder of Teach Me Miss, and now also a mum.

I trained as a teacher because I’ve always cared deeply about how children learn.

Then I became a parent - and suddenly I saw the other side too.
