For House to House by Shamma Faisal Al Bastaki, we treated the book as an extension of its oral, material, and archival qualities. Rooted in oral histories surrounding Dubai Creek, the publication draws from recollection, fragmented and passed between generations.
Its visual language emerged through carving, stamping, tracing, and layering. Linocut textures, fragmented marks, and hand-worked surfaces were used as structural gestures tied to the book’s themes of memory, transmission, and lived routine. Throughout the publication, the Creek functions as a continuous thread, carrying the rhythms of everyday life across households, neighborhoods, and time.
The book incorporates scanned lettering and sketches by Shamma’s grandfather, allowing fragments of family archive and gesture to quietly move through the book alongside the poems themselves.
