ā€œComing from a humble family and having lived all my life in India I was extremely scared to venture out on my own in one of the fastest-paced cities in the world Dubai I started working in a digital marketing agency here and it was the best thing to ever happen to me! I had the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry in their respective fields in a very laid back, judgement-free and creative environment and things just took off from there and I think I am most grateful for the endless learning and growth opportunities Dubai has with so many young people from around the world coming here to push their horizons you can’t help but feel inspired every day. I love being a now and hope you find your second home along the way in your adventures too šŸ’›ā€

It has always been my dream to travel the world for school, work & tourism. After my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting I found the Masters of Global Business (MGB) program at Uvic. My motivation for choosing this program was the multi-cultural dimension included in the learning experience which I consider priceless. I left Nigeria with 2 big boxes and no family in Canada. However, leaving my comfort zone and coming to a different environment was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I met with great minds and made friends with people from different cultures other than mine. I learnt cultural dexterity and expanded my paradigms. This experience was a complete package as there was a serious side in terms of submitting assignments with strict deadlines, multi-tasking, balancing numerous academic commitments and doing 2 masters degrees at the same time. On the other hand, it was filled with very funny moments, I remember when my eyebrows got shaved off by a Korean stylist who misinterpreted my request. I had to wear a head warmer for 1 month to cover my ā€œnew lookā€ I was lucky it was winter then. I also remember misplacing my passport in a city where I couldn’t speak the language. In total, I was able to travel to 15 countries within 8 months & learn so much about the world. From this experience, I can boldly say that travelling adds flavor to learning experience. It teaches you how to build relationships and leverage other people skills and experiences in improving yourself. In addition to this, travelling teaches you to be compassionate and care for humanity. After the MGB program, I volunteered in Northern Peru teaching English to young kids and I was awarded the ā€œLive by the Leafā€ award presented by my organization to individuals that demonstrate the true Canadian culture.

Hello guys, I am Xuefei from China. After I finished my Bachelor degree in China, I chose the MGB program to go out of my homeland and start a career in another country. The program is attractive to many applicants because of the reputation of the university and it has a unique course structure. I will introduce this program with several few keywords: 3 countries, 9 months, 40 people, projects with reputed companies, a masters degree and a good excuse to travel with parent's financial support. These were the things I was expecting before the program. After completing the program which is more than a year now, when I look back in time this program has made me realize that it is more than that. To me, it was a chance to step out of my comfort zone and see what is going on out there. I got the chance to hear different voices and different opinions, to meet so many amazing people and became friends with them. The most important part is that I got to know more of who I am and who I want to become after all these experiences.

It was my first time travelling abroad, that to all alone. I come from an India joint family, so my mom along with family mom my aunts and grandmother packed around 110 kg of luggage for me. On the day I was flying the landlord in Canada cancelled my accommodation! So I was in Canada with 75 kg & 5 bags and no place to stay. Fortunately, I had a family friend staying there where I could sleep for the first night in Vancouver! Next day I moved to Victoria and luckily found a place. When I tell this to people in my program they laugh, as most of them were carrying only 1 bag for the whole program! Classes at Uvic were fun and interactive, that breakout sessions for team activities were fun too. Fortunately, all 3 semesters had a travel break, so I could travel 1st: the Canadian Rockies, 2nd: Europe 3rd: Korea to Busan & Jeju Island. I did group and solo travels. And both of them were equally fun and cherish-able. I have always been fortunate to meet the best people starting with India right from school buddies, hostel and college buddies. I met amazing people at MGB who have helped me with everything! Also with MGB I now have friends from around the world. For studies, there was never pressure! The program was so well planned that a student could travel as well as study. Tip: I would truly recommend everyone to consider studying abroad at least once in your life! The difference in culture makes you better understand yourself. It also gives you the confidence to face any situation in your life.

My name is Tessa, I’m 22. I’m half French/half British, but I also have a strong Italian heritage; it’s a great mix! I grew up in France, but I decided to do my Bachelors degree in the UK, at the University of Surrey. During those 4 years, I got the chance to do a year-long internship in Barcelona; those university years truly were the best of my life...so far!!! I’ve always loved travelling and had greatly visited Europe, so I decided it was time to take the next step; when I graduated in July 2019 I had planned to go on a promising tour of Asia & Australia for a year. but my plans have been compromised due to the current situation. I was still lucky enough to backpack for 3 months across Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia! I learnt to cook new recipes there and when I came back to France I decided to commit to my passion, cooking, therefore I finally created the cooking account I’ve wanted for the past 2 years ! I’m now dedicated at helping young students cook, at improving their skills as I improve mine, at posting simple recipes with guided steps! I’m motivated to share my passion with others, and excited to see what the future holds.

"Going on my international study journey was nothing short of life changing. Having had the chance to live in five countries in the course of five years was challenging in many ways but even more rewarding. Every sleepless night wondering whether I had made the right decision, whether I was just wasting time and money, whether I could ever fit into the new culture, adapt to it without losing who I am, it was all worth it. My newly found global family reminds me daily that there's no one way to live life and that the world is so rich in and life that we should really try to be grateful that we get to live in it."

The idea of leaving Canada and studying abroad was at first nerve racking to me but something I had always wanted to do. When I found the MGB program it was nothing but amazing. I felt so lucky to learn from people all over the world and understand their culture and experiences. I feel now that I am more in tune with the world and am able to adapt myself to cultural styles. It is such a humbling experience to be in a culture not your own. Being push out your comfort zone is where the true learning happens. The friendships made and connections to business will be something I cherish and bring with me to every future role and business.

"Traveling the world while pursuing a master's degree builds knowledge, character, and skills. The two most important things I learned are 1) The people you travel/study with will colour your journey and enrich it with their friendships and new lessons 2) Having an open mind and the ability to adapt are the two ingredients for the recipe to succeed in this globalized world"
