KatiKati

The Space in the β€˜Between’

Al Jaddaf was once a productive landscape where labour, skill and material shaped both place and community. As industries evolved, many of the systems that provided meaning, stability and belonging were lost, leaving workers disconnected from both place and purpose.

KatiKati reimagines architecture as a regenerative system that restores rather than extracts. Inspired by resilient natural systems such as the cactus, the project creates a productive yet giving environment where people, craft and ecology coexist and thrive.

By embedding skill, continuity and care into the built environment, the design offers a vision for a more sustainable and connected future.

This project was developed by our Architecture student, Zain Nanji.

Come and see more of our students' inspiring projects at the Degree Show on 10 & 11 June, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

A Nostalgic Playscape for Repair

Once a site of short-lived spectacle and commercial entertainment, Wonderland is reimagined as a continuous journey of movement, memory and collective care.

Wander/land explores what happens after the spectacle fades. Rather than erasing the site's history, the project transforms the former amusement park into a restorative public landscape where play becomes an everyday act of recovery, connection and belonging.

By preserving memory while creating new opportunities for engagement, the design encourages communities to reconnect with both place and one another, turning a forgotten site into a space for reflection, healing and shared experiences.

This project was developed by our Architecture student, Audrey Ventura Opena.

Dubai is planning to eliminate landfills by 2027 through a large-scale waste-to-energy facility. However, some experts argue that burning waste to generate energy could create additional environmental challenges through increased carbon emissions.

Counterbalance explores alternative solutions higher up the waste hierarchy, including second-hand economies, recycling initiatives and responsible consumption. Set within an industrial context, the project highlights the tension between waste generation and waste reduction, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable behaviours.

Rather than striving for perfection, the design embraces authenticity β€” revealing the realities of our consumer-driven culture while reminding us that meaningful change is still possible.

This project was developed by our Architecture student, Wayne Matreo.
