Earth from Orion, all thanks to Artemis 1.🌘🌎
Orion’s entry into the lunar sphere of influence will make the Moon, instead of Earth, the main gravitational force acting on the spacecraft. Flight controllers will conduct an outbound powered flyby burn to harness the force from the Moon’s gravity, accelerate the spacecraft, and direct it toward a distant retrograde orbit beyond the Moon. During the outbound powered flyby, Orion will make its closest approach – approximately 80 miles – above to the lunar surface. Four days later, another burn using the European Service Module will insert Orion into distant retrograde orbit, where it will remain for about a week to test spacecraft systems.

Our Space Launch System (SLS), the most powerful rocket in the world, carrying the Orion spacecraft launches on the Artemis I flight test, Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, from Launch Complex 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1:47 a.m. EST.
Artemis I is the first integrated flight test of the agency’s deep space exploration systems: the Orion spacecraft, SLS rocket, and ground systems. The mission is a critical part of our Moon to Mars exploration approach—an important test before flying astronauts on the Artemis II mission.

NASA’s DART 🎯 Mission Hits ☄️ in First-Ever Planetary Defence Test.
The world's first planetary defence technology demonstration, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which had been in space for ten months, successfully impacted its asteroid target on Monday. This was the agency's first attempt to move an asteroid in space.
At 7:14 p.m. EDT, mission control at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, declared the impact to have been successful.
DART's collision with the asteroid Dimorphos provides evidence of a workable mitigation approach for defending the world from an Earth-bound asteroid or comet, should one be identified. This mitigation strategy is part of NASA's larger planetary defence strategy.
Bill Nelson, the administrator of NASA, stated that DART "represents, at its core, an extraordinary success for planetary security, but it is also a mission of unity with a meaningful benefit for all humanity." NASA is studying.
The international partnership "converted science fiction into science fact, revealing one strategy to defend Earth" as NASA examines the cosmos and our home planet.
DART focused on the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos, a tiny rock with a diameter of only 530 feet (160 metres). It revolves around the bigger Didymos, a 2,560-foot (780-meter) asteroid. There is no danger to Earth from either asteroid.

The observatory's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), which has three specialised infrared filters that highlight the details of the planet, produced the two images. The light has been mapped onto the visible spectrum because infrared light cannot be seen by the human eye. The shortest wavelengths are typically shown as more blue, and the longest wavelengths tend to appear redder. Judy Schmidt, a citizen scientist, worked with scientists to convert the Webb data into images.
