It is important not to get overwhelmed once you start the test — just remember to focus on coding conventions and guidelines.

The following list is a mini breakdown of the areas of study you should ensure you have a thorough understanding of prior to sitting for the exam:

☑️Medical terminology: Prefixes/suffixes used for naming medical conditions/procedures
☑️HCPCS: Alphanumeric designated codes that identify supplies/drugs/temporary codes
☑️Modifiers: Two-digit suffix appended to the end of a code to indicate additional services/providers/statuses

Use both the “Alphabetic Index” and the “Tabular List” when locating and assigning a code in ICD-10-CM.
Reliance on only the “Alphabetic Index” or “Tabular List” leads to errors in code assignment and less specificity in code selection.

Those who assign the code directly from the “Alphabetic Index” without verifying the code in the “Tabular List” tend to leave off necessary characters and often assign the incorrect codes for the diagnoses.
