Come for Afro Baobab Cultural Hub. Stay for the coffee. ☕

There’s a café inside Afro Baobab - and it isn’t an afterthought.

Hospitality takes many forms across Africa. In Senegal, one expression of it is teranga: a tradition of welcoming, sharing, generosity, and making people feel they belong.

That spirit inspired us to create somewhere to sit, talk, and stay a little longer -whether you come with a friend, meet someone new, or simply enjoy a quiet coffee.

Because some places are made to be seen. Afro Baobab is made to be experienced.

Some people dream of creating a place where everyone belongs. Saran is bringing that dream to life. 🌿

Today, we celebrate the heart behind Afro Baobab.

Happy Birthday, Saran! May this year bring you as much joy and inspiration as you bring to others. 🧡

Some places are built. Others are prepared. 🧡

In many African homes, you don't just finish a room - you ready it for the people who will fill it. The floor is swept before anyone arrives. A chair is moved so a guest has somewhere to sit. You prepare because someone is coming.

That's what's happening in Al Quoz right now.

We're not building a space to be looked at. We're preparing a home for African culture in this city - for the stories that will be told here, the rhythms that will be played, the people who will meet each other in a room they didn't expect to.

Soon, the door opens and it stops being ours.

Then it's yours.

🎭 From Guinea - the country where our story began.

The Nimba (D'mba) mask, created by the Baga people of coastal Guinea, is one of the largest and most striking masks in all of Africa. Carved from a single piece of wood and carried on the shoulders during celebrations, it honours the mother figure - a towering symbol of fertility, abundance, and the strength of women who hold communities together.

For our founder Saran, this piece means something more. Guinea is home. And having the Nimba in the Afro Baobab Cultural Hub collection is a way of bringing a piece of that home to Dubai. A reproduction of this mask already lives here, in Al Quoz. Soon, you will be able to stand in front of it.

📚 What can an African folktale teach a child about communication?

More than you might expect.

Across the continent, stories were never written down first. They were told - out loud, to a room, by someone who had to hold attention without a page or a screen. The teller changed the pace, the voice, the ending, depending on who was listening.

Here is what that looks like for a class.

Students listen to a folktale told the way it was meant to be told. Then they work out what it means, because these stories rarely announce their lesson. Then they retell it themselves - and discover how much changes when the words are theirs.

What they walk away with: vocabulary, interpretation, confidence speaking to a group, and the understanding that a story belongs to whoever is telling it.

It connects to English, drama, humanities, and the conversations about identity that matter in a city where students come from everywhere.

We're opening soon and are taking bookings for school visits now.

Africa didn’t suddenly become larger. The map many of us grew up with simply made it look smaller.

Created in 1569 for sea navigation, the Mercator map enlarges places farther from the equator-including Greenland, Canada, northern Europe and Russia. It was useful for sailors, but it was never designed to compare the true area of continents.

On this map, Africa and Greenland appear almost equal in size. In reality, Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland and 23% larger than North America.

This week, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution led by Togo and supported by African states, encouraging wider use of the Equal Earth map-which represents land areas in their correct relative proportions.

A map does more than show us the world. It shapes how children see where they come from-and how the rest of the world sees them.

Africa has always been this large.

The map is finally catching up.
