đź“š Are Students Empty Containers Waiting to Be Filled?

Paulo Freire criticized what he called the “banking model” of education—a system in which teachers deposit information while students are expected to receive, memorize, and repeat it.

Freire did not believe that teachers or knowledge were unimportant. He believed that meaningful education should also involve dialogue, questioning, reflection, and active participation.

A classroom should not only give students answers. It should help them think independently, understand the world around them, and use their knowledge responsibly.

In our classrooms, are students active participants—or mainly receivers of information?

When Leaving Becomes the Dream

When young people stop asking, “How can I build my future here?” and begin asking, “How can I leave?” something is deeply wrong.

Many young Iranians love their country, families, language, and culture. They are not searching for a new home because they have forgotten Iran. They are searching for a place where their dreams might have room to grow.

For years, education offered one of the few possible paths forward: learning English, taking an international exam, and applying to a university abroad. Now, with IELTS testing stopped inside Iran and access to other international examinations becoming more difficult, even that path is narrowing.

During my time in the UAE, I have asked many young people whether they dream of leaving. So far, I have not met one whose main ambition is simply to escape.

When young people feel safe, respected, and hopeful, they want to build their future at home.

Can we actually teach empathy? ❤️

We teach students mathematics, science, languages, and technology. But what about understanding another person’s feelings, experiences, and perspectives?

Can empathy be developed in the classroom? And if it can, shouldn’t it be one of the most important goals of education?

Perhaps education is not only about preparing students for exams and careers. Perhaps it should also prepare them to understand each other—and live together.

🌍 If Education Is Successful, Why Is the World Still So Violent?

Education has helped humanity achieve extraordinary progress in science, medicine, and technology. Yet violence, war, hatred, and division remain part of our world.

Perhaps knowledge and professional skills are not enough. Education should also help people develop empathy, responsibility, critical thinking, and respect for differences.

Education alone cannot guarantee peace. But if we educate only the mind and ignore the human being, are we leaving out something essential?

Who decides what children should learn?

Every curriculum is built through choices. Someone decides which parts of history students study, which books they read, which languages receive attention, and which values schools encourage.

Of course, no curriculum can include everything. But when some ideas are included and others are left out, those decisions influence how students understand themselves, their society, and the wider world.

This does not mean that education is always political or dishonest. It simply reminds us that education cannot be completely separated from culture, society, and power.

So, who should have a voice in designing the curriculum—and whose voices might be missing?

What if education is not only preparation for life, but part of life itself?

John Dewey believed that meaningful education happens through experience, participation, and engagement with real problems. Students need knowledge for their future, but learning should also be connected to the lives they are living today.

When students investigate, discuss, cooperate, and search for solutions, they are not only learning academic subjects. They are also developing communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and responsibility—skills they need both today and tomorrow.

Do our schools connect learning to real life, or do students spend too much time memorizing information for later?

🎓 Are education and schooling really the same thing?

WHAT IS EDUCATION REALLY FOR?

An even more curiosity-driven alternative:

WE SPEND YEARS IN SCHOOL… BUT WHY?

I prefer the second one for a Reel because it creates an immediate question in the viewer’s mind.

We spend years in education. But how often do we question what education is actually supposed to achieve?

Families invest heavily in it. Governments build entire systems around it. We go through schools, exams, universities and degrees.

But what is the final goal?

Is education mainly about getting a job? Passing exams? Earning a degree? Collecting information?

Or should it do something deeper—teach us how to think, how to question, how to make decisions, and how to understand the world around us?

And perhaps the most important question is:

Are our education systems actually achieving these goals?

This is the beginning of a series in which I’ll explore education—its purpose, its problems, how it has changed, and where it may be going.

I don’t want to give you all the answers. I want us to start asking better questions.

We have more language-learning tools than any generation before us. AI, apps, YouTube, podcasts, online teachers, instant translation, pronunciation tools—and access to English almost 24/7.

So why aren’t we all learning languages incredibly fast?

Technology can give us information instantly. It can correct us, translate for us, and even practise conversations with us.

But there’s still one thing it cannot do for us: practise.

We still have to listen, speak, remember, forget, make mistakes, try again—and keep going.

Maybe technology hasn’t removed the hard part of language learning. It has simply removed many of our excuses.
