Martin studies whether virtual reality (VR) is an accessible experimental approach in the behavioral sciences, capable of minimizing trade-offs and improving laboratory experimentations. Testing empathy generation towards animal shelters using lab, field and VR experiments, his results show that the VR cohort of subjects yields similar results to ones found in the field and lab while being cost-effective.

Martin Stewart is a senior student from Uruguay at NYUAD and an experimenter at SSELab. Majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Economics and Applied Math, he is passionate about merging technology and other disciplines. For his capstone, he studies how VR technology can serve as a tool for empathy building.

Meet Xayna, our lab's social humanoid robot and Mayada Oudah, an SSEL Postdoc! Xayna is a Pepper robot manufactured by SoftBank Robotics and is here to work with Mayada's grant-awarded work that focuses on human-robot interactions. She (Xayna) is 120cm tall and has the ability to interact with humans, recognize faces and capture basic human emotions. Reach out and learn more about our team and experimental research at SSEL.
