What did “1968” mean beyond Europe and North America?
This collection, which grew out of the "Revisiting 1968 and the Global Sixties" conference at the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, brings together scholars from across the globe to rethink the Sixties as a worldwide moment of protest, transformation, and nation-building.
Edited by Chen Jian, Martin Klimke, Masha Kirasirova, Mary Nolan, Marilyn Young, and Joanna Waley-Cohen, the volume reflects the kind of global, interdisciplinary work that continues to shape conversations at the NYUAD Institute.

The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute would like to acknowledge the late David Heard CBE, who was recognized as an honoree during the 12th edition of the Abu Dhabi Awards, recently held at Qasr Al Hosn and conferred by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
David Heard made landmark contributions to the study of the history of Abu Dhabi and the wider region. His meticulous historical research and publications remain foundational references for scholars, residents, and all those interested in the heritage of the Emirates.
His wife, Dr. Frauke Heard-Bey, also a previous recipient of the Abu Dhabi Award, has long been recognized as one of the leading historians of the UAE and a central figure in documenting the emergence of the modern state, and together their scholarship has profoundly enriched the nation’s historical record.
In recognition of this shared legacy, David Heard and Frauke Heard-Bey were honored as the inaugural NYUAD Institute Dhikhr Award winners in 2025 for their lasting contributions to UAE heritage.
The archive of materials that David Heard and Frauke Heard-Bey generously bequeathed to New York University will continue to serve as an invaluable resource for future generations of researchers, ensuring that their lifelong dedication to documenting the region’s history endures as a lasting legacy.

Our upcoming talk will look at how digital twins are reshaping approaches to heart health. By integrating clinical data with physics-based simulations, researchers are creating virtual models that reflect a patient’s heart in real time. This work will show how these tools may help clinicians assess risk earlier and guide more precise treatment plans.
