Emergency escape equipment is designed to give a person breathable air for a limited time so they can escape from a hazardous atmosphere and reach a safe area.

In the video, participants are practicing with the equipment — not just watching a demonstration. That practical experience matters because, in a real emergency, there may be smoke, toxic gases, poor visibility, and very little time to react.

PICKING SOMETHING UP? THINK ABOUT YOUR BACK.

It’s easy to bend down and pick something up without giving it a second thought. But the way we lift can put unnecessary strain on our back — especially when we repeat the same movement throughout the day.

Before you lift, take a moment:

• Get close to the object instead of reaching forward.
• Bend your knees and keep your back in a more neutral position.
• Lift smoothly and avoid twisting while carrying the load.

Good manual-handling habits aren't complicated, but they can make a big difference over time.

When an emergency happens, there isn't always time to stop and figure things out. Knowing the right first step can make a real difference.

From a choking incident to serious bleeding, burns, fractures, stroke, or a severe allergic reaction — staying calm and knowing the basics can help you respond until professional medical help arrives.

A few simple things are worth remembering:

• Choking: Recognise when someone needs immediate help and respond quickly.
• Bleeding: Apply firm, direct pressure and control the bleeding.
• Burns: Remove the heat source and cool the burn with cool running water.
• Fractures: Keep the injured area still and supported.
• Stroke: Remember FAST — Face, Arms, Speech, Time.
• Severe allergic reaction: Recognise the warning signs and get emergency help immediately.

First aid isn't about being a doctor. It's about knowing what to do, staying calm, and taking the right action when it matters.

You can't always see the danger.

Hydrogen sulfide, or H₂S, is one of those hazards that can be present without being obvious.

It can accumulate in places like sewers, tanks, pits, and other confined or poorly ventilated areas. The danger is that workers may not realize they're exposed until it's too late.

That's why relying on your senses isn't enough.

Before entering an area where H₂S could be present, proper gas testing, ventilation, monitoring, PPE, and emergency procedures are essential.

And remember—never assume an area is safe simply because someone else has entered it before.

Ever wondered what actually happens inside a fire extinguisher?

When we look at a fire extinguisher, it may seem like a simple cylinder with a handle and hose.

But there is quite a bit happening inside.

The extinguisher is pressurized so that, when the valve is operated, the pressure pushes the extinguishing agent through the internal siphon tube and out through the nozzle.

In a dry-powder extinguisher, that powder is discharged toward the fire, helping to interrupt the combustion process and control the flames.

Understanding how safety equipment works isn't just interesting—it helps us use it correctly when an emergency happens.

A grinder can do the job in seconds. It can also cause an injury in seconds.

Grinding is something many workers do every day, which can make it easy to become too comfortable with the task.

But a grinding wheel is powerful equipment. A damaged wheel, missing guard, incorrect PPE, loose clothing, or simply standing in the wrong position can turn a routine job into a serious accident.

Before using a grinder, take a moment.

Check the wheel and machine condition.
Make sure the guard is correctly fitted.
Wear the appropriate eye and face protection.
Keep your hands and body away from the wheel's line of fire.
And never rush a job just because you've done it hundreds of times before.

Most importantly, don't assume that experience makes a hazardous task safe.

Never stand under a suspended load.

A heavy load hanging from a crane may look stable, but things can change in seconds.

The load can swing.
The lifting equipment can fail.
The load can shift unexpectedly.

And when people are standing too close, there may be very little time to react.

Safe lifting isn't just about having the right crane or lifting equipment. It starts with proper planning, competent personnel, inspected lifting gear, clear communication, and—most importantly—keeping people out of the danger zone.

Where can it move?
And where should people NOT be standing?**
