Student Planners Network is a student initiated organisation oriented towards integrating and empowering students studying Rural and Urban Planning at the university of Zimbabwe and other Universities nationwide.This initiative presents students with a platform to air their opinions about the planning ground.
SPN aims to create connections among students from department upto national level through educational seminars and retreats.This will enable a productive study environment with cooperation,as well as to instil the spirit of team work among us.We also wish to go as far as financially assisting our fellow students who because of financial reasons drop out or defer.This will be done through fundraisings that we will be doing at the department.
Furthermore, we wish to establish professional connections between students and professionals.This will be done through career guidance programmes and workshops.Through these connections and programmes, we will be able to know and understand the world out there and know our destiny after graduation.This will also create a platform for attachments that will boost our technical knowhow and experience in actual working environment.
We also wish to create effective communication between students and lecturers as well as the department heads.This will enable the provision of quality education and current study materials be it question papers or text books.It is through this that we will improve our perfomance in class as well as boost the theoretical aspect of our career and even make us better in terms of our social skills.
Our society also aims to brainstorm, discuss and present possible solutions to the real world problems.This will be made possible through weekly discussions and publications that we will be doing as Rural and Urban Planning Students. We will try and work with the Ministry of Local Government Rural and Urban Development so as to do research works in the realm of planning.l belive as students we are open minded enough to learn and come up with better plans if we are given the right podium.

Lastly l say "Our aim here as students is not to go out there proving that we are degreed,NO! l in fact believe we are here to acquire theoretical knowledge and technical skills and not only papers. l thank you.

Student planners how are you?

We came to be after discovering that our positions are threatened and our patrons are not in any way responding because their positions are secure. I think its time we unite and meet so as to discuss our way forward so that we may protect our future and the integrity of our profession. Ladies and gentleman its high time we protect our future.

If we meet once annually as students we can change a lot...

The integrated student planners network is a forum that was created for the primary purpose of unearthing the planning concerns to the students as a means of creating better products from the university.
In line with this policy, we have since crafted new initiatives that are aimed at drawing student planners closer to the
true definition of planning as a profession. We need to be organised and in touch with the contemporary issues that
are affecting the Zimbabwean urban communities. Urban poverty, growth of the informal sector, birth of illegal and
informal settlements, abuse by land barons and unregulated urban sprawl have all contributed to the state of our cities
today. We as planners have been denied the opportunity to partake in our profession and ensure the functionality of
our cities and their integrity. The profession will soon assume its protection, and we as the students need to be ready
technically for solutions to the issues that are affecting society today.
As a new initiative, we have introduced a series of appraisal courts, which cross examine the planning decisions, policy decisions and general planning issues that the country is faced by. In these sessions, the students will proffer alternatives where necessary, to the failed policies. For these sessions, the society will invite planners in the professional
field to provide reviews and justify certain decisions that would have been made.
That way alone, the student fraternity becomes more prepared to challenge issues and research, while at the same
time, bringing the students closer to the reality of the planning arena.
AIM OF THE PROGRAM
To create a level playing field between planning students and planners in the field
OBJECTIVES
Create discussion platforms
Networking opportunity between students and planning professionals
Promote inter-departmental relations
Confidence building
Research techniques
STRUCTURE
The program will be held once in every fortnight and will be launched on the 26th of September 2015, by a delegate
from the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planning.
The student parties will be provided with topics and each class will provide presenters to come and provide for a
course of action which will be defended before a panel involving lecturers and an expert in any particular field which
will be under scrutiny, after which, reviews will provided on the presentations.
