WHAT IS TRISOMY 21?

This condition is commonly known as Down Syndrome. This occurs when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of having 2 copies they have 3 ( trisomy means 3). This affects their physical growth, learning and development.

CAUSES:
● caused by extra chromosome 21 present at conception.
● not caused by what parents did during pregnancy
●chances of having a child with this condition increases with maternal age although it can occur at any age

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
● they can learn to walk, talk, read and write though they often learn at a slow pace as compared to others.
●they need early intervention, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and inclusive education.

CURE
It is incurable meaning that currently there is no treatment which can be used to remove the extra chromosome 21 or permanently cure the condition. However many of health challenges associated with it are treatable or can be managed. Many people with this condition live long through appropriate medical care, education, family and community support.
