Empowering the next generation of pharmacy professionals

11/12/2025

Imagine a patient who receives a prescription but struggles to understand the instructions because they’re not in their first language. The risk of error increases, and trust in the healthcare system decreases. This is where patient centered care in multilingual settings becomes essential.

Language barriers can affect treatment adherence, health outcomes and equity. Studies show that patients with limited proficiency in the dominant language are more likely to miss appointments and face poorer health outcomes. For pharmacy students, this means learning how to bridge communication gaps.

So where can you start?
1. Learn basic health phrases in local languages
2. Use visuals, diagrams or translated leaflets
3. Collaborate with interpreters or community health workers
4. Practice empathy and active listening
5. Explore digital translation tools responsibly

By embracing multilingual communication, you make pharmacy practice more inclusive and equitable.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent global threat with serious health consequences, and by 2050, AMR-related deaths could be 70% higher than today. This year’s World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW), themed “Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” highlights the need for immediate action.

Organizations such as the Global Health EDCTP3 (European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnerships) are supporting the fight against AMR through 32 projects across 47 countries, examples include:

1. The UTI-Diag:
This project is evaluating rapid point-of-care tools in Cameroon and Senegal combining protein-based tests, molecular detection of resistance genes, and digital decision-support. Early findings show that these tools could cut misdiagnosis rates from 33% to just 5%, reducing treatment failures and lowering healthcare costs by up to 40%.

2. SNIP-AFRICA:
This initiative is building adaptive platform trials to quickly identify effective treatments for newborn infections, especially in settings where AMR is rising. Its flexible design allows faster testing and comparison of therapies, helping improve care for one of the most vulnerable patient groups.

As pharmacists, we have a vital role in tackling AMR. Simple, everyday actions like discouraging unnecessary antibiotic use, supporting adherence and raising community awareness can make a meaningful difference. Stewardship starts right where we are, and AMR awareness must continue long after WAAW ends.
