Play. Learn. Live.
Growing up, we played traditional Shona games like nhodo, tsoro, hwishu, and mafurawu. At the time, they felt like pure joy. But now, we see them differently. These games are more than play – they are powerful tools that build coordination, resilience, sensory integration, problem solving, and connection.
In this new perspective piece for the inaugural issue of the Human Occupation & Wellbeing Journal, we explore how these indigenous games can be harnessed in therapy, especially with neurodiverse children. They don’t just help with development – they foster joy, belonging, and cultural pride.
It’s about reclaiming what’s ours and showing the world that therapy can be rooted in identity, culture, and play.
