A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him.

She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I will give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me something more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”

~In life, we often admire those who have wealth, success, or influence. We seek to gain what they possess, believing that having these things will bring us security and fulfillment. But true wisdom lies not in acquiring possessions but in understanding the mindset, character, and values that allow a person to give generously and live abundantly.

~The traveler in the story received a precious stone, a gift that could sustain him for a lifetime. Yet, he realized that the real treasure was not the stone itself but the wisdom and inner wealth of the woman who gave it without hesitation. He returned, not for more riches, but to learn the heart and mind that made her capable of such generosity.

The lesson here is profound: rather than seeking what is in someone’s hands, seek what is in their heart.

Instead of chasing wealth, pursue the wisdom that creates it. Instead of desiring success, learn the discipline and mindset behind it. Instead of wanting influence, develop the character that earns it.
