In April 2015, then-Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe made a controversial remarks stating that Kalanga people, an ethnic group predominantly in Matebeleland South, were uneducated and responsible for crimes in South Africa. This was during a Southern African Development Community(SADC) in Harare. He was responding to the Xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
