ZAMBIA'S EDUCATION RECORDS MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE MILESTONE

The World Bank has today handed over 82 secondary schools to the government.

The Minister of Education, Honourable Douglas Syakalima in the company of the Permanent Secretary-Educational Services, Dr. Kelvin Mambwe and several senior officials officiated at the ceremony held at Sikoongo Weekly Boarding School in Chirundu District in Southern Province.

The development is part of the Phase One (1) project led by the World Bank sponsored Zambia Education Enhancement Project-ZEEP.

The 82 fully functional secondary schools handed over by World Bank Country Manager, Dr. Achim Fock are across seven provinces and are as follows:

1. Central: 12
2. Eastern: 15
3. Luapula: 13
4. Lusaka: 8
5. Muchinga: 12
6. Northern: 8
7. Southern: 14

The aforementioned learning institutions have a total enrolment of 32,144 pupils.

The Ministry of Education congratulates Honourable Douglas Munsaka Syakalima on being conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Education Administration and Leadership by Gideon Robert University during the university’s 15th Graduation Ceremony at the Government Complex in Lusaka.

This distinguished honour recognises his exemplary leadership in steering Zambia’s education sector through transformative reforms, including guiding the mass enrolment of 2.3 million learners under the Free Education Policy.

His vision and steadfast commitment have unlocked opportunities for countless learners, reinforcing education as a powerful engine for national development, social transformation, and human dignity.

Hon. Syakalima’s unmatched dedication to uniting and strengthening the education workforce remains a cornerstone of our progress.

Under his stewardship, teachers and administrators continue to collaborate with purpose, advancing inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all. As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our resolve to build on his leadership—empowering our teachers, narrowing access gaps, embracing innovation, and ensuring that no learner is left behind.

Examinations Council of Zambia Executive Director - Dr Michael Chilala this morning briefed members of the Media on new provisions of the Candidate Registration for 2026 Examinations.

Highlights of the briefing included the following:

Registration of candidates will require their images (portrait pictures) to be taken and these will appear on the examination registers and eventually on the certificates. This is a security aspect which has been added to the registration process to curb incidents of impersonation especially for General Certificate of Education (GCE) candidates. Including the candidate’s image is one way of fighting examination malpractices.

Candidates for the Primary School Leaving Examination will need to provide a birth certificate or birth record when registering (However, this is not compulsory for now).

Parents’ details will also be captured on the Online Candidate Registration System (OCRS) to give them an opportunity to verify the details of candidates before they are confirmed by the ECZ. This is in a bid to reduce requests for name amendments. In previous years, the ECZ has been receiving numerous reports with claims that candidates were registered for the wrong subjects or that their names were misspelt.

“Contrary to the situation were the ECZ and the Schools were the only ones responsible for these amendments to take place, we have now taken it to the family to verify the details. It is upon that verification that Candidate Registration will be confirmed,” Dr Chilala said.
