Our club is proud to celebrate the achievements of individuals who continue to advance the culture of research and academic excellence.

Recently, our Club President, Emmanuel Jay Mandona, together with our former executive member, Chisanga Mwape, attended the Neurological Association of Zambia (NAZ) Conference in Lusaka, where they had the opportunity to present their research abstracts and in attendance was the founder and former President of the CBU Mentorship and Research Club, Dr .Emmanuel Chileshe Phiri.

Their participation at this national scientific meeting reflects the dedication, curiosity, and commitment to research that our club strives to cultivate. It is inspiring to see both our current and former leaders actively contributing to scientific discourse and representing the Copperbelt University community on such an important platform.

We congratulate them on this commendable achievement and thank them for continuing to inspire the next generation of student researchers. May this serve as motivation for all our members to embrace research, innovation, and lifelong learning.

Guest Speaker: Dr Clyde Moono Hakayuwa

Topic: Scientific writing, publication, and presentation

Clyde Moono Hakayuwa is a Zambian medical doctor, Health Research Fellow and research consultant. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery (MBChB) from the Copperbelt University Michael Chilufya Sata School of Medicine. He is a co-founder of Let's Walk Children's Haven. He is a published and multiple award winning researcher with work featured in PubMed and Google Scholar. His interests focus on, digital health technology, infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, and preventative medicine. He is also a passionate mentor, actively running research training and data analysis cohorts for the Zambia Medical Students' Association (ZAMSA) & MedTalk Zambia.

Guest Speaker: Dr Teddy Mukuka

Topic: Data management and basic biostatistics

Teddy Mukuka is a medical doctor (MBChB, Copperbelt University) with hands-on experience in health data analysis using IBM SPSS and Microsoft Excel. As founder of A-Scores Research Institute, he has supported over 250 researchers with data collection, analysis, and scientific writing. He holds certifications in statistics from Stanford University and data analysis from Johns Hopkins and Alison, and has tutored medical students in biostatistics and research methodology. He is passionate about making data accessible, meaningful, and actionable.

Guest speaker: Mr Samuel Jere

Topic: Study design and research methodology

Samuel Jere is a biomedical and research scientist dedicated to tackling one of the defining global health challenges of our time: antimicrobial resistance. Specializing in pathogen genomics and AMR surveillance, his work at the forefront of infectious disease research aims to safeguard the future of global public health.

Beyond his critical work in the laboratory—including his role as a research fellow with UNC Global Projects Zambia—Samuel is a passionate advocate for scientific advancement and African leadership. As the ESCMID Local Champion for Zambia, he actively shapes the future of clinical microbiology and infectious disease advocacy.

Driven by a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of mentorship, a legacy inspired by his father, Samuel empowers the next generation of medical leaders through his volunteer leadership with the Pan-African Organization for Health, Education, and Research. Whether he is decoding complex genomic data, presenting at international health congresses, or managing sustainable agricultural initiatives, Samuel embodies a relentless pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and community impact.

Guest Speaker: Dr Emmanuel Chileshe Phiri

Topic: Literature review and proposal development

Dr Emmanuel Chileshe Phiri is a medical doctor and award-winning early-career clinical researcher with a focus on brain health, epidemiology, and health systems strengthening in low-resource settings. His work is driven by a commitment to bridging clinical research with disease patterns and advancing evidence-based practice.

He currently serves as a Research Coordinator and Assistant at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, where he supports clinical research. His experience spans clinical studies, systematic reviews, and multi-country collaborations, with contributions to scientific writing, publications, journal peer review, and editorial work.

Dr. Phiri has received national recognition and scholarships for excellence in research and global healthcare, reflecting his academic merit and commitment to advancing health research and clinical care.

He is passionate about mentorship and research capacity building, exemplified by his role as Founder and former President of the Copperbelt University Mentorship and Research Interest Club, where he created a platform that fosters academic growth and research engagement among students.

He has a long-term goal of advancing evidence-based interventions, strengthening research capacity, and contributing to policy and clinical practice in health across Africa and beyond.

Emmanuel S. Phiri

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION - Day 1
Guest Speaker: Dr Emmanuel Mukambo

Topic: Introduction to medical research and idea generation

Dr. Emmanuel Mukambo is a medical doctor, epidemiologist, and Research Fellow at Zambart based in Lusaka, Zambia. His work focuses on neuroinfectious diseases, HIV-related neurological disorders, and strengthening health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Mukambo is the Principal Investigator of the SYNAPSE Study at University Teaching Hospital, investigating the relationship between syphilis, HIV, and neurological disease among adults in Zambia. He is the recipient of the competitive Early Career Grant from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), which supports this research. His work has also received support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

Dr. Mukambo is currently pursuing an MSc in Epidemiology at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine through the Southern Africa Capacity Research Network (SOFAR) Fellowship. He is also passionate about mentoring early-career healthcare care professionals and supporting young researchers in scientific writing, study design and academic career development.
