Understanding the atom.
An atom is a smallest particle of an element that takes part in a chemical reaction. It is made up of the nucleus (central part) and the shells (outer part). There are four shells namely; K, L, M and N. An atom also consist of subatomic particles namely; protons, neutrons and electrons. The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus while the electrons are found in the shells (energy levels). Protons are positively charged, neutrons are neutral and electrons are negatively charged. There are equal number of protons and electrons in a neutral atom. Electrons revolve around the nucleus in the shells.
