The United Party for National Development (UPND) has nominated several former student union leaders under the newly introduced Proportional Representation system.
Among those named are former University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) Vice President Jemimah Mwaba, popularly known as Commander Kwishiba; former Copperbelt Students' Union President Lloyd Nsonga; former Chalimbana University Students’ Union President Gabriel Simutowe; and former UNZASU President Vincent Musilikani.
Also on the list is former UNZASU President Kabaso Mwanto, popularly known as “Shuwa Shuwa.”
The nominations could see the former student leaders transition from university and student politics into national political representation through seats provided for youths under the Proportional Representation system.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is overseeing the process, which provides additional National Assembly representation for women, youths and persons with disabilities.
The nominees are expected to undergo the prescribed verification and validation process before the final composition of the Proportional Representation seats is confirmed.
