Reminiscing: Bacterial and fungal isolates as part of final (4th) year students' projects in 2024. We know that bacteria and fungi are part of our daily lives; it's just a question of which species you're dealing with at a particular time. Identification is key.

Congratulations to a member of the team, Joseph Malama, a masters student in our department & lab, on his recent appointment as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Young Ambassador to Zambia. In this role, Joseph will engage students and early - career scientists in Zambia, to provide official local presence of ASM and represent the local scientific community to ASM. Particularly, among other responsibilities he will aim to:
1. Build relationships between ASM & national/regional universities and scientific societies.
2. Facilitate networking opportunities and provide local assistance for ASM programs and projects.

Each year, for 3 years now, the School of Natural and Applied Sciences identifies the best perfoming male and female 3rd year students in the Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology. They receive the S.M Manchishi award. Here are the latest recipients for the 2023/24 academic year. The next duo will be identified once results are published.

A year ago now, during vacation internship, we attempted to extract and amplify DNA from bacteria that we cultured from aquarium water, in preparation for DNA sequencing.

Checking the integrity of mouse brain slices using an inverted Epi fluorescence microscope in the lab. As they say, “seeing is believing.”

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step. Not everyone always arrives. Maybe we will arrive one day; maybe we will never arrive 🤷🏾‍♂️, but importantly, we took the first [baby] step 🚶‍➡️.
