Chairman’s Perspective: Competence Is the New Currency of Success

As Zambia continues its journey toward sustainable economic growth and national transformation, one truth has become increasingly clear: the future of our country will not be built by qualifications alone, it will be built by competence.

This is why Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) is not just an academic model but a national necessity.

For too long, many education systems across developing economies have focused heavily on theory, often leaving graduates with qualifications but without the practical ability to meet the real demands of industry. Employers today are not only looking for certificates on paper; they are actively searching for individuals who can solve problems, apply knowledge, adapt quickly, and get the job done.

This direction was reaffirmed by the Ministry of Education Zambia, through Permanent Secretary Dr Kelvin Mambwe, during the national rollout and implementation engagements on 17th July 2025, where Zambia’s commitment to the Competence-Based Curriculum was reinforced as a strategic pathway toward producing learners equipped with practical skills, critical thinking, innovation, and workplace readiness. This aligns with the Ministry’s 2025 curriculum modules and implementation materials signed by Dr. Mambwe, which describe the Competence-Based Curriculum as a “transformative step in improving education quality and relevance.”
