The University of Zambia (UNZA) has achieved a significant milestone with the three-year provisional accreditation of its Mining Engineering and Civil Engineering programmes by the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ). The accreditation, awarded under the Washington Accord framework, recognizes UNZAโ€™s commitment to international standards in engineering education.

The decision follows a comprehensive review conducted by an EIZ Accreditation Team from 22nd to 24th September 2025. The team commended the university for its strong graduate outcomes, robust accreditation systems, and functional laboratories supported by solid industry linkages.

In a letter addressed to the University, Eng. David Kamungu, Registrar and CEO of EIZ, highlighted that the programmes were found to be โ€œsubstantially equivalentโ€ to the expectations of the Washington Accord, a key international agreement governing engineering education and professional mobility.

โ€œThe provisional accreditation is valid for three years, during which EIZ will conduct annual monitoring visits to assess UNZAโ€™s progress in addressing areas requiring improvement. These include laboratory safety, student-staff ratios, and resourcing for quality assurance units,โ€ Eng. Kamungu stated.

This achievement marks a critical step toward full accreditation and enhances the global recognition of UNZAโ€™s engineering graduates, reinforcing the universityโ€™s role in advancing excellence in higher education in Zambia and beyond.
