BITCOIN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE TOUR # 2

We’re heading to the Information & Communication University on March 27th for our second stop of the Bitcoin OSS Campus Ignition, continuing our mission to introduce Bitcoin open-source education and opportunities to university students in Zambia — in partnership with Bitcoin Campus Zambia and BitDevs Zambia.

Our first stop earlier this month was at Cavendish University Zambia, in collaboration with the Cavendish University Zambia Information Technology Association-CUZITA.

ONE DOWN, 7 MORE UNIVERSITIES TO GO

This week we partnered with BitDevs Zambia to support their Bitcoin OSS Campus Ignition program, and it was a very successful launch. Students were energized, inspired, and a new Bitcoin community launched on campus.

The aim of Bitcoin OSS Campus Ignition is to introduce Bitcoin open-source education and opportunities to university students in Zambia.

Programs like this are important for growing the next generation of Bitcoin builders in Zambia and across Africa.

A big thank you to Cavendish University Zambia Information Technology Association-CUZITA, Cavendish University Zambia, Geyser and the entire Geyser community for supporting this initiative and helping make it possible.

𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽

Zambia will have its first-ever Bitcoin Lightning Developer Bootcamp this August at AfricaWorks in Lusaka. The five-day, hands-on training will run from August 5–9, 2025, organized by Bitdevs Zambia, a new initiative of Bitcoin Zambia in partnership with Free Routing Africa, a pan-African open-source initiative.

The event marks a turning point for Zambia’s growing Bitcoin development scene, offering local developers and university students a rare opportunity to gain practical skills in building apps on the Lightning Network, a layer-two scaling solution for Bitcoin that enables fast, low-cost, and borderless payments. By acquiring these skills, participants will also be better positioned to compete in the growing remote career opportunities in Lightning development, blockchain, and other related decentralized technologies.

The bootcamp is part of a broader push across the continent to grow technical capacity in decentralized systems. Similar developer bootcamps by Africa Free Routing have already been held in Benin, Nigeria, and South Africa, each producing cohorts of Lightning-literate developers now contributing to global open-source projects and local fintech innovations.

During the weeklong event, participants will explore how to install and run Bitcoin and Lightning nodes, open channels, send and receive test transactions, and build basic applications that interact with the Lightning Network. They’ll also gain hands-on experience using tools like Polar, Core Lightning, and various Lightning APIs. The bootcamp will culminate in a mini hackathon, where teams will prototype real-world applications based on what they’ve learned.

“Zambia’s tech community is eager to explore the real-world utility of Bitcoin beyond speculation,” said a spokesperson for BitDevs Zambia. “This bootcamp is a practical and timely step toward building our own tools for local and regional challenges.”
The initiative is supported by key backers including Btrust, Tether, OpenSats, and African Bitcoiners. Their support helps make the bootcamp free and accessible to promising developers from across Zambia.

Attendance is free of charge for Zambian participants. However, spaces are limited. Interested developers and students are encouraged to apply early through the official signup page. Applicants should select the “Scholarship” option and disregard the default $100 fee listed on the form.

BitDevs Zambia, as a new branch of Bitcoin Zambia, has already started laying the foundation for a strong local developer community. It has hosted Zambia’s first Socratic seminars and is planning a hackathon to follow shortly after the bootcamp. Bitcoin Zambia itself is a grassroots initiative working to increase Bitcoin awareness and adoption through education, workshops, and open collaboration.
