On 18th September 2024, the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECSZ) under the Community Coined Climate Actions project witnessed the official launch and presentation of the Makumucha Kasensa Kalonga Conservation Group constitution and committee in Mbila Ward, in a ceremony graced by His Royal Highness Chief Shezongo under the historic “Mubanga Tree.” This marked the chief's first visit to the Makumucha Zone, where he expressed his strong support for the conservation and protection of the Makumucha Springs and Stream.

The event featured an emotional story from Senior Headman Mulilabanyama, a village elder, who recounted the origins of the name "Makumucha" and stressed the importance of preserving the area for future generations.

Over 120 people attended the launch, including Chief Shezongo and representatives from organizations such as SeedCo. The newly appointed committee of the conservation group was introduced, and the constitution's vision, mission, objectives, and key bylaws were presented to guide the Group's work. WECSZ National Coordinator, Mr. Shawa, underscored the importance of involving children in environmental initiatives and expressed his delight at the active participation of the children and youth in the newly established committee.

Recognizing that gardening is a primary livelihood for many in the area, SeedCo pledged to support local farmers and gardeners by providing free seedlings to boost agricultural productivity. The day also featured a poetry performance by students from Mbila Secondary School, raising awareness about the issues of child marriages and the critical importance of educating the girl child.

The launch signifies a crucial step toward safeguarding the Makumucha Springs and promoting Locally Led Adaptation and the use of Nature Based Solutions to help communities adapt to the impacts of Climate Change.

Looking back to the commemoration of World Children's Day last year in Kasane (Botswana) some children from Zambia got a chance to speak to His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema and different Heads of State present on the issue that have been affecting them as children, including the enactment of the child code bill which had not yet been enacted at that time in Zambia.

The President stated that he would endeavour to strengthen the laws that favour and protect the interest of children and he assured the children that he would pass the child code bill this year.

The President has fulfilled his promise to the Zambian children and the child code bill has finally been enacted. This is a huge win for ALL the children in the country.

And for the Children/Youth Ambassadors Gift Musabula, Nathan J C Phirie, Priscilla Aquila, Daka Thu Lani Jr and child activist Yande Banda who took part in the commemoration and spoke on behalf of all children in the country we are proud of you and let's keep fighting for a better Zambia for All.

Earlier this year WECSZ in partnership with Unicef Zambia under the Unite4Climate and Conservation (U4CC) programme initiated a waste segregation initiative at Arakan Girls Secondary School. The Zambia Environmental Management Agency commended the initiative and helped build the capacity in the pupils as they embarked on this waste recycling journey.

It is quite amazing to see how the Chipembele Club members AKA the GreenTeenz Club have been successfully seperating plastic bags, paper and plastic bottles and they have now managed to sale this waste to Manja Pamodzi Foundation.

As WECSZ we hope to carry out more of such initiatives as we continue to create awareness on environmental issues and create responsible citizens amongst Zambian Children and Youth.

Kudos team Arakan!

Unite4Climate and Conservation

The Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECSZ) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have been implementing the Unite4Climate (U4C) Programme for the past six (6) years which led to a more environmentally sustainable environment through the planting of over 30,000 trees in 200 schools countrywide, through the implementation of thirteen (13) climate change adaptation projects, which resulted to cleaner and greener schools, and reuse, reduction and recycling of materials such as waste paper, cans and plastics through interpersonal communication and community sensitizations to 465 schools. Moving foward, we have incorporated conservation and our programme is now called Unite4Climate and Conservation (U4CC). Youths have energies that they cannot afford to waste. We tap into this potential and help Zambian youths unleash their abilities in Climate Change and Conservation among-st other social issues such as HIV and Aids as well as Communication Skills that are necessary for them to become better future leaders and practical problem solvers.
