Zambiaโ€™s Youth Unemployment Crisis Is Deepened by Mindset Gaps
As the country ushers in a new year, Mr Nyirenda, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Frontier Students Research and Assignment Services, has extended New Year greetings to Zambians while issuing a sobering reflection on the state of youth unemployment and preparedness in the country. Speaking from Kitwe through an institutional statement, Mr Nyirenda described the New Year as both a moment of hope and a moment of honest self-examination, particularly for young people.

Mr Nyirenda wished all Zambians, especially youths and students, a prosperous and purposeful New Year, expressing hope that 2026 will mark a turning point in how young people approach education, work, and opportunity. However, he noted that it is unfortunate that despite the promise of a new beginning, many youths continue to repeat the same patterns that have contributed to unemployment and underachievement.

According to Mr Nyirenda, Zambiaโ€™s youth unemployment crisis cannot be explained by economic challenges alone. While acknowledging limited job creation, he stressed that the situation is made worse by inadequate preparation, weak work culture, and a growing disconnect between education, skills, and market needs. He observed that every year thousands of young people graduate from institutions of higher learning, yet many remain unemployed or underemployed because they lack practical skills, adaptability, and professional discipline.

He expressed concern over the decline in discipline and consistency among youths, explaining that many desire employment and success but struggle with punctuality, commitment, and long-term effort. Mr Nyirenda stated that employers increasingly value attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn, yet these qualities are often missing. He warned that without discipline, even the few available opportunities are quickly lost.

Mr Nyirenda also highlighted short-term thinking as a major contributor to unemployment. He noted that many youths prioritize quick income, instant fame, and short-lived opportunities instead of investing time in skills development and career growth. According to him, this mindset leads to repeated cycles of instability and frustration, rather than sustainable employment or entrepreneurship.

Turning to technology, Mr Nyirenda described it as one of the most wasted opportunities among Zambian youths. He said it is unfortunate that many young people treat technology merely as a source of entertainment, comedy, gossip, and social validation, while ignoring its power as a tool for learning, innovation, and income generation. He noted that the same mobile phones used daily for scrolling and amusement could be used to acquire digital skills, access online courses, conduct research, learn trades, build businesses, and connect to global work opportunities. In his view, technology has become a divider between youths who are preparing for the future and those who are unknowingly delaying it or disadvantaging themselves.

On education, Mr Nyirenda pointed out a serious mismatch between academic qualifications and employable skills. He explained that certificates alone are no longer enough in todayโ€™s economy, and that institutions must go beyond theory to equip students with practical competencies, problem-solving abilities, research skills, and entrepreneurial thinking. He urged education providers in Zambia to strengthen industry partnerships, scientific programmes, and hands-on learning to better prepare students for the realities of the labour market.

Mr Nyirenda also cautioned against the culture of blame that surrounds unemployment, where youths attribute failure entirely to government, the economy, or background. While recognizing systemic challenges, he stressed that personal responsibility, continuous learning, and adaptability remain essential. He encouraged youths to explore alternative pathways such as self-employment, freelancing, and skills-based work, rather than focusing solely on formal employment.

In proposing solutions, Mr Nyirenda called on youths to make the New Year a season of change by embracing discipline, long-term planning, and purposeful use of technology. He urged them to seek skills, accept correction, upgrade their education consistently, and align their ambitions with values and purpose. At the same time, he called on policymakers, educational institutions, and the private sector to work together with frontier Student Research and Assignment Services to address unemployment through skills-focused education, youth enterprise support, and structured training opportunities.

Mr Nyirenda concluded by wishing all Zambians a productive and meaningful New Year (2026), expressing hope that the year ahead will produce a generation of youths who create jobs and not only in what is given to them, but in what they are willing to learn, build, and become. He emphasized that Zambiaโ€™s future will be shaped not by announcements and promises alone, but by prepared, disciplined, and skilled young people ready to take responsibility in a changing world.

PRESS STATEMENT | CALL FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION ON UNREGULATED MUSHROOMING OF CHURCHES IN ZAMBIA

Lusaka โ€” Frontier Student Research and Assignment Services has expressed serious concern over the rapid and largely unregulated mushrooming of churches across Zambia, calling on the Government to urgently review, regulate, and enforce minimum standards for the registration and operation of religious institutions.

We note with alarm a growing situation where, at almost every corner of the road, new church structures emerge under different names, yet all professing the same Christian faith, often without clear doctrinal accountability, physical planning compliance, or social responsibility standards. While freedom of worship is a constitutional right that must be protected, it must not be abused in ways that harm social cohesion, economic productivity, and the dignity of faith itself.

Our concern is not with Christianity as a faith, but with the unchecked commercialization and fragmentation of religion, which has increasingly encouraged dependency, passivity, and false hope among vulnerable populations. In many communities, individuals trapped in poverty are being persuaded to rely solely on โ€œmiraclesโ€ and โ€œprophetic declarationsโ€ for economic survival, rather than being empowered through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and honest labour.

Frontier Student Research and Assessment Services observes troubling parallels between this phenomenon and other forms of social escapism. Just as alcohol abuseโ€”whether through beer or spiritsโ€”can trap individuals in cycles of poverty and hopelessness, so too can the misuse of religion when it discourages personal effort, critical thinking, and responsibility. Both require thoughtful policy attention and social intervention to rescue citizens from self-destructive cycles.

We strongly emphasize that Christian doctrine itself does not promote laziness or economic inactivity. Scripture is explicit that faith without works is dead, and that prayer must be accompanied by action. The highest sacrifice, according to Christian belief, was already accomplished on the cross by grace, and humanity was thereafter instructed to work, steward resources, and transform society through righteous action. Any teaching that contradicts this principle distorts the very faith it claims to uphold.

We therefore call upon the Government of the Republic of Zambia, through relevant ministries and regulatory bodies, to:

Undertake a comprehensive review of laws governing the registration, zoning, and operation of churches and religious organizations;
Enforce minimum standards relating to accountability, transparency, physical planning, and community impact;
Protect citizens from exploitative religious practices that deepen poverty and discourage productive livelihoods; and
Promote faith-based engagement that complements national development goals rather than undermining them.

Zambia is a Christian nation by declaration, but it must also be a nation of productivity, responsibility, and integrity. True faith should uplift communities, inspire hard work, and contribute meaningfully to national developmentโ€”not entrench poverty or normalize idleness.

Frontier Student Research and Assignment Services remains committed to evidence-based advocacy, student-led research, and constructive national dialogue aimed at safeguarding both freedom of religion and the socio-economic wellbeing of the Zambian people.
