Public Notice: The Bank of Zambia is pleased to announce the introduction of a new family of the Zambian currency to be launched on March 31, 2025. The new currency family consists of six banknotes (K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, and K10), and six coins (K5, K2, K1,50N, 10N, and 5N).

Highlights

· A new family of the Zambian currency, consisting, of six banknotes (K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, and K10), and six coins (K5, K2, K1,50N, 10N, and 5N) will be launched on March 31, 2025.

· The introduction of the new family of the Zambian currency is pursuant to Section 17(1) of the BoZ Act, 2022.

· The alpha code (ZMW), the numeric code (967), and the currency symbol (K) will remain unchanged. As will be the value.

· The design of the new currency draws inspiration from the country’s rich heritage, featuring elements that celebrate our unique flora and fauna, and breathtaking waterfalls.

· This initiative, which was kick-started by the Board approval in July 2021, reflects the Bank’s commitment to providing currency that is secure, efficient, user-friendly, and well-suited for everyday transactions.

· The Minister of Finance and National Planning will soon issue a Statutory Instrument (SI) detailing the procedures for exchanging the old currency for the new. The SI will also specify the exchange period as well as the designated exchange points across the country where the public can exchange their old currency for the new currency.

· To facilitate this change, the Bank will launch a country-wide sensitisation campaign to educate the public about the new currency so that everyone understands and becomes familiar with its features.

· Members of the public are encouraged to continue using the existing banknotes and coins, which remain legal tender until the time to be specified in the SI

· The Bank apologises for the current poor state of the banknotes. With the introduction of the new currency, this should soon be a thing of the past.

Barbra Banda Makes History as 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year

Zambia Women’s National team captain Barbra Banda has become the first Zambian to win the CAF Women's Player of the Year Award.

Banda beat fierce competition from Morocco’s star striker Sana Mssoudy and Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to clinch the 2024 award at a glittering ceremony at the Palais des Congres de Marrakech in Hivernage district.

At the same awards ceremony, Banda also made the CAF/FIFPRO Africa XI 2024.

The Orlando Pride striker joins South Africans Noko Matlou and Thembi Kgatlana as the only players from Southern Africa to have ever claimed the honor largely won by West Africans. Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala has won it a record six times.

The 2024 CAF Awards covered the period from January to October this year. Banda was recently named the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2024 and became the first African to be named in the 2024 FIFPRO Women’s World 11, a global recognition determined by votes from 7,000 professional footballers.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where she netted four goals for the Copper Queens during the tournament, Banda made history as the first player in women’s football to score three hat-tricks in Olympic games.

In her debut season in the National Women’s Soccer League with Orlando Pride, Banda was instrumental in her team’s success, scoring 13 goals and 6 assists during the regular season. Her impactful performance in the playoffs, including scoring the game-winning goal in the final, earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade.

TRUE FREEDOM ALSO MEANS BEING FREE FROM LOADSHEDDING 👏

Now I Know you think I will go full throttle talking everything bad About Zesco Limited , NOP ‼️

I Personally feel the situation we are experiencing as seen from the pictures of the Kariba Dam from which we produce our electricity is as a result of climate change and this must not even be blamed on anyone.

The truth is that over the years as a country, we have not invested in alternative sources of energy and that's why we have been caught pants 👖 down with the situation.

My appeal as we celebrate independence day is that let us also fight for our independence from over dependency on hydropower.

Yes alternative sources of energy like Solar and Gensets are expensive to invest in BUT EXPENSIVE ELECTRICITY 🔌 IS BETTER THAN NO ELECTRICITY AT ALL.

Lets invest in renewable alternative sources of energy both at household level and national level to avoid being inconvenienced.

Happy 60th Independence Day Mother Zambians.

Did you know that this year's (2024) budget is K177.9 billion, including debt? And next year's (2025) budget is projected at K182.4 billion, excluding debt, yet we still plan to borrow K34.7 billion, bringing the total to K217.1 billion.

Why can't we live within the K182.4 billion? If we needed more funds later in the year, surely, we could have raised some revenue as the year progresses.

I wish I could wholeheartedly say, “Happy Independence,” but how can we when we are not yet free from debt? Sixty years have passed since we first celebrated our independence, and while it's a milestone, we have new freedoms to fight for.

Besides debt freedom, what other freedoms do you wish to celebrate?
