Across Africa’s classrooms, a quiet tension lingers beneath the noise of recitations and the shuffle of overfilled desks. Learners memorize, repeat, and prepare for the next exam — yet something far more important is often missing: freedom.
Freedom to think.
Freedom to question.
Freedom to create.
This raises a fundamental question for any society serious about progress:
Is education liberating our children, or standardizing them?
The Freire Perspective
The late Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire warned of a global risk in education systems: treating students as “containers to be filled.”
In his landmark book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Freire argued that when education becomes a one-way transfer of information, it loses its moral purpose.
It stops being human.
It stops being transformative.
And unfortunately, this pattern can still be seen across much of the developing world today.
Many learners know the right answers, but not the right questions.
Many can recall facts, but struggle to apply them.
Many pass exams, yet remain unprepared for a world that requires creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability.
Freire’s critique is no longer just academic — it is painfully relevant.
The Hidden Cost of Standardization
Standardization promises fairness and efficiency, yet it often creates the opposite.
Education systems that prioritize uniformity risk:
• Rewarding memorization over understanding
• Producing conformity instead of originality
• Restricting curiosity instead of cultivating it
• Punishing mistakes instead of learning from them
These outcomes limit not just students — but entire communities.
A society cannot innovate if its classrooms discourage imagination.
A country cannot progress if its learners are trained to follow rather than think.
This is the emotional and intellectual cost of an education system built on regulation rather than liberation.
Where Technology Fits — and Fails
It might seem that technology automatically brings freedom.
But without intention, EdTech can replicate the same rigid systems, only faster.
Digital lessons can become digital scripts.
Online assessments can become automated cages.
The promise of EdTech is not in efficiency — it is in possibility.
Possibility for personalization.
Possibility for creativity.
Possibility for dignity.

iLearnZed: A Story of Reclaiming Learning
In Zambia today, the sound of progress is both beautiful and heartbreaking. You can hear it in the laughter of children running to school, their uniforms slightly torn but their dreams intact. You can see it in the long lines of pupils crowding into classrooms built for half their number. Education, once a privilege, is now free and open to all. But as millions of children returned to the classroom, something quietly broke.
Teachers became outnumbered. Classrooms became overcrowded. One teacher began to face not 40, but 80—sometimes even 100 learners—at once. In many schools, eight students still share a single textbook. The joy of free education began to collide with the reality of too few teachers, too few resources, and too little attention for each child.
At the same time, outside these same classrooms, tens of thousands of qualified teachers sat idle—educated, trained, and eager to teach, but unemployed. Some waited for government recruitment that never came. Others took jobs far below their qualification, simply to survive. The irony was unbearable: a nation full of learners without teachers, and teachers without classrooms.
It was this contradiction that gave birth to iLearnZed — a bold idea rooted in empathy and possibility.
iLearnZed began with a single question: What if the classroom didn’t have walls? What if every teacher could reach learners beyond their physical school, and every student could access quality education regardless of where they live or what their parents earn?
From that question came a vision — to build a digital bridge that connects learners and teachers across Zambia. A bridge where education is not limited by geography, where time and space bend to the will of human curiosity, and where every child can finally learn at their own pace, guided by a real teacher who understands their struggle.
iLearnZed is not just another online platform. It is a teacher-powered revolution. On iLearnZed, teachers design and upload courses aligned with Zambia’s national curriculum. Students access these lessons for as little as K20 per subject per month — ten times cheaper than traditional tuition. The teachers earn 90% of the revenue directly, and iLearnZed sustains the platform with the rest. It is a system built on fairness, dignity, and shared growth.
For students, iLearnZed means something profound. It means no more missing out because the classroom was too full. It means having a teacher in your pocket — a voice that explains, a video that guides, and quizzes that track your progress. It means hope.

Schooling or Education? A Journey of Becoming
If the first step of schooling is to learn what to think, then true education begins when we learn how to think — and ultimately, why to think at all.
Benjamin Bloom, in All Our Children Learning, reminds us that education’s purpose is not to select the few who succeed, but to develop the many who can. He believed that every child, given the right conditions, can learn to a high standard — not as an act of privilege, but as a fulfillment of their human potential.
Marina Arshavskiy, writing decades later, described learning as both “a science and an art,” a process that should “make the acquisition of skill more appealing, effective, and efficient.” Yet her deeper insight lies between the lines: that education, like art, must move the soul — not merely the intellect.
Linda Nilson and Ludwika Goodson go further in Online Teaching at Its Best, arguing that effective teaching “transcends technology” because learning remains, at its core, a human relationship — one that invites curiosity, struggle, and reflection.
And Rob Hubbard, in his Really Useful eLearning Instruction Manual, calls for “learning experiences that help people learn, not just deliver information.” That distinction — between learning and information — is perhaps the modern educator’s greatest moral frontier.
