Barnaby’s Squeaky Secret

Barnaby was a very large, very brave Golden Retriever. He wasn't afraid of thunderstorms, he wasn't afraid of the vacuum cleaner, and he certainly wasn't afraid of the dark.

But Barnaby had one big secret: He was terrified of his own farts.
One afternoon, the house was very quiet. Barnaby was taking a nap on the rug.

Suddenly, a tiny sound came from his back end: “Poot.”
Barnaby jumped up! He looked behind him.
"Who said that?" his eyes seemed to ask. He sniffed the air, barked once at his own tail, and ran into the kitchen to hide under the table.
A minute later, it happened again. This time it was louder. “Pffft!”

Barnaby bolted out from under the table. He thought a tiny, invisible ghost was following him. He started running in circles, trying to catch the "ghost" that was making the noise.

Round and round he went!

He slid across the wooden floor.
He accidentally knocked over a basket of laundry.
He ended up wearing a pair of Dad’s giant blue underpants on his head.
Just then, Barnaby’s human, a little boy named Sam, walked into the room. He saw his big, brave dog wearing underpants like a hat and chasing his own tail.

“Pooooot!” went the noise one more time.
Barnaby froze. He looked at Sam. Sam looked at Barnaby. Then, Sam started to giggle. Then he started to laugh. "Barnaby! That’s just your tummy making music!"

Barnaby stopped running. He wagged his tail, the blue underpants fell off his head, and he let out a long, happy sigh.
“P r r r r r t.”

Barnaby didn't run this time. He just wagged his tail and went back to sleep. He decided that if the "ghost" wanted to make music, it could stay.
