If insulin is for lowering bl00d sugar, why check for potassium?”

Nursing students and new grad nurses, gather here and let’s learn.

You know when you have a patient on insulin, the first thing that you focus on is their glucose levels, right?

Okay.
I need you to understand something.

As you already know, insulin helps glucose to enter the cells,

However, as it moves into the cells, potassium follows it too thereby causing the potassium level in the bl00d to drop.

And a drop in potassium level can lead to muscle weakness and life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias if it’s not observed early.

That is why it’s important to review the patient’s electrolytes before and during insulin therapy.

Your role isn’t just to give medications, your role is to understand their effects and also anticipate complications.

Always remember :

Before celebrating that falling bl00d sugar levels, make sure you’re also watching the potassium levels of your patient.

When insulin is on the chart, potassium should be on your mind too.

I hope this helps.

Patient;
Mr Sensei sir,
Why is it that A Nurse is more Superior than a clinical officer? and why is the Nursing officer given authority to Run a Health facility and not a clinical officer...❓

MRSENSEI;⬇️⬇️
Well, A Clinical Officer is good at treating a disease, a Registered Nurse is trained to manage both the patient AND the facility.

📚FIVE REASONS WHY FEMALE ADOLESCENTS ARE PRONE TO CONTRACTING SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES ⬇️⬇️

♦️ Biological immaturity: Cervical ectopy / columnar epithelium is exposed on the ectocervix in adolescents, making it more susceptible to infection by gonorrhoea and chlamydia.
♦️ Lack of knowledge / inadequate information: Lack of comprehensive s*xuality education on STIs, safe s*x and condom use.
♦️ Peer pressure and experimentation: Desire to fit in, curiosity, risky s*xual behavior, multiple partners, unprotected s*x.
♦️ Low socioeconomic status / transactional s*x: Engaging in s*x for money, grades, gifts, data, lunch - "sugar daddy" phenomenon.
♦️ Inability to negotiate for safe s*x: Fear to ask partner to use condom due to age, power imbalance, gender inequality.
♦️ Early s*xual debut and long reproductive span: Early exposure to s*xual activity.
♦️ Substance abuse: Alcohol and drugs impair judgement leading to unprotected s*x.
