Police recover stolen ECZ laptop as Mandevu parliamentary results remain pending!
Police in Lusaka have recovered a laptop belonging to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), which was allegedly stolen from the Mandevu Constituency Totalling Centre during the August 13 general elections.
Deputy Inspector General of Police–Operations, Fred Hamaamba said the recovery followed investigations into the theft of election materials reported during the election period.
Speaking during a briefing today, Hamaamba said police, with the help of members of the public, traced a Toyota Vitz allegedly linked to the theft.
He said when officers confronted the vehicle, its occupants abandoned it and fled the scene. Police subsequently recovered several items from the vehicle, including the ECZ laptop.
According to Hamaamba, the vehicle was displaying a truck registration number plate, which is believed to have been fake.
He said the suspects remain on the run, while the recovered laptop has been taken to Lusaka Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Hamaamba said although the elections were generally peaceful, police recorded a few incidents, including the theft of election materials in Mandevu.
The Mandevu Constituency parliamentary result has yet to be announced.
