Franchising might be a solution for your business (Part 1)
__A powerful model to consider.
Thereโs a very popular television show for entrepreneurs in the US called โThe Profitโ in which a billionaire entrepreneur called Mark Lemonis goes around the country investing in struggling small businesses, usually with a great product, but who donโt yet have the processes (or capital) needed to be successful.
Itโs one of many such shows that will be aired on Kwesรฉ TV, as we hold the exclusive rights to broadcast this show in Africa. Kwesรฉ TV will have a 24-hour channel dedicated to entrepreneurs called Kwesรฉ Inc.
Mark Lemonis argues that three things are necessary for a business to be successful: People, Process and Product. I agree with him completely, and have written here recently about my experiences with some of these issues.
This brings me to what I want to talk about in this short series:
THE FRANCHISE BUSINESS MODEL
__This is one of the most powerful business models ever devised and it creates literally millions of jobs around the world.
# Franchising significantly reduces the risks associated with starting and running a business successfully.
# As a "franchisee" you donโt have to spend time trying to develop a product or service yourself, but you take a proven product or service which people already want.
# A good franchise normally comes with well-established processes, and training and support done by highly-skilled professionals. This helps take out the risk associated with creating and managing your own processes.
Having passion and being prepared to work is simply not enough, you have to know what youโre doing. A franchise helps you learn at the feet of experienced entrepreneurs who have done it before.
Iโve experienced both sides of franchising:
# Franchisee: This is when you operate a business as a franchise from someone else. For instance, Iโve operated a Coca-Cola franchise for many years. It's a beautiful business: I don't have to think about the product or do research into what customers want. Coca-Cola takes care of everything! All I have to do is manage my people and the cash register!
# Franchisor: Iโve learnt more than a thing or two from the masters like Coke and McDonalds, and Iโve also used the Franchise Model to expand my own businesses:
When we set up Mascom Wireless in Botswana, I wanted to get shops up and running quickly. I wanted them in the citiesโ best locations, so I went round the cities and literally chose the sites myself. These were usually occupied by businesses doing different things. I would approach the current owners and tell them they could make more money in a new industry called mobile phonesโฆ This was Franchising!
We would then strip out their stores and re-brand them. Their people were trained by us and wore the same uniforms as our own staff.
This meant I didnโt need the headache of operating so many stores, and I shared the entrepreneurial burden with others.
Iโve used this model time and time again to scale quickly, reduce capital requirements, and also to use the entrepreneurial zeal that staff sometimes cannot provide.
Growing your business by franchising is also a way of reducing the capital required to scale your business. In fact, if you really understand franchising you will realize it's another way to raise capital to expand your business.
Ray Kroc who grew McDonald's into the most successful franchise in the world, said something interesting: โThe two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it...โ
Do you think heโs right? What are some other requirements weโve discussed?
To be continued. . .

Our backgrounds continue to kill us. We continue to create a poverty inheriting generation. Children born of poverty continue to inherit poverty and pass it on to the next generation.
Icala lapha lenkinga;
Yabona if you born in a poor family and worse if you will not get the chance to go to school, you tend to dream so low. Your dreams remain shallow. You continue to have dreams like โ Kufisa kushayela. Kufisa kuvakasha eMbabane. Kufisa kuba neSpaza. Kufisa kulima ingadzeโ. At that moment a child of your same age from the urban side is thinking of online marketing business, thinking of property management, thinking of an entertainment App. Even when someone advices you to start a car wash you bravely say โ car wash is too big, I want a spaza shopโ. Your mind has been reduced through upbringing. This has resulted to even Swazis who afford real businesses to still do small scale farming, etc.
Some people are failures in life not because they didnโt have dreams but just because their dreams were too shallow.
I was checking Facebook these days and there is one place every Swazi is visiting these days. Its called Wendyโs Lodge by Siphofaneni. Each time I see these people enjoy the boat cruise I quickly look back that normal Swazi from rural areas who have come up with such a simple concept but is able to excite so many Swazis. We have had dams in Swaziland for years. We still have a lot of dams where only birds enjoy themselves. We just needed this one Swazi who would think as if there was no box at all. We all thought boat cruise was for โthoseโ people until this guy proved its possible. I always support Swazi businesses but I think this guy has gone an extra mile. We all opening car washes, we all have groceries, we all have piggery businesses, we all have sewing businesses, we all have fish and chips; ARE we really to be stuck to the businesses ran by our forefathers. Solo sitfunga ticatfulo natsi bekunene.
Its time as Swazis we start thinking as if there is no box at all. For a minute think as if you have never seen a business initiative. All cellphone outlets are now known to be of a certain group of people. Arenโt we capable ? Donโt stop with your current business BUT make your current business your foundation for something better. We are stuck with selling clothes, stuck with selling vegetables. Isnโt this the right time to start our own massage outlets in the rural areas? I recently saw one in SA. Isnโt it the time to buy our own self service vending machines in our bus ranks and malls or we still waiting for the unborn child in X country to come do it for us 18 years from now?
Thanks Zweli for bringing a Swazi owned taste of international experience. It might look small for big travelers but the fact that an ordinary Swazi can have a taste of 1 hour boat cruise for as little as E100; through a facility owned by a Swazi is 10 years beyond. I have seen similar facilities in my recent traveling to China and Malaysia and I still feel this guy has done a good job. South Africa yes is big because of the ocean and they have REAL cruises but I once also took the St Lucia Lake short cruise in South Africa and I paid R200 (about 3 years ago) and I still feel our Swazi guy has done a great job.
We all can do it. We can. And yes we will.
