# **SAMPLE— TEACHING SCRIPT—LESSON 3 – MONDAY, APRIL 13**
# # **Know Yourself**
*(Luke 18:9–14)*
**1. Opening Story**
Two men come to church to pray.
* **One stands proudly at the front.** He wants to be seen. His prayer is full of self‑praise. He thanks God—not for mercy—but for how “good” he believes he is.
* **The other stands at the back.** He is broken, ashamed, and painfully aware of his sins. He cannot lift his eyes. With a trembling voice he whispers: **“Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner.”**
Jesus uses this simple story to reveal a deep spiritual truth.
**2. Read Luke 18:9–14**
Jesus ends with this powerful statement: **“Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”**
**3. What Do We Learn About These Two Men?**
**The Proud Man (Pharisee)**
* Talks about himself
* Compares himself to others
* Trusts in his own goodness
* Feels no need for forgiveness
* Leaves unchanged
**The Humble Man (Tax Collector)**
* Admits his sin
* Asks for mercy
* Brings nothing to impress God
* **Depends completely on God’s grace**
* Leaves forgiven
**THIS POINT EXPLAINED--**
**The humble man shows that he needs to depend on God.**
His whole posture says: “I cannot save myself. I need You.”
* His **words** show dependence: “Be merciful to me.”
* His **tears** show dependence: he knows he cannot fix his own heart.
* His **silence** shows dependence: he has no excuses, no boasting.
* His **prayer** shows dependence: he trusts God’s mercy, not his own goodness.
**Humility is not weakness.** **Humility is dependence.** **And dependence is what opens the door to grace.**
**4. The Lesson for Us Today**
**A. Pride Comes Naturally**
We all like to feel capable, strong, and right. But Jesus teaches the opposite: The way **up** is **down**—through humility.
**B. Heaven Sees Differently**
Titles, achievements, and reputation do not impress God. He looks at the **heart**, not at the résumé.
**C. Only the Humble Can Be Saved**
